Couple of questions here, Someone told me that if I run on a treadmill to wear a sweatshirt because it will burn more calories, is this true or not.

Next is that I like to walk on the treadmill holding 20 pound dumb bells in each hand and do arm curls but I'm looking into getting a weighted vest to do the same thing for me, so has anyone else used a weighted vest and do they work or not.

TJ, as far as the sweat shirt it wont burn more calories it will just make you sweat more which will cause you to lose water weight alot like olympic style wrestlers do prior to weigh in. A weighted vest is a great tool. Im currently training for the combat challenge and use a weighted vest on all of my runs, you can find a 40lb adjustable vest at big5 sports for about 80 bucks. The good thing about the vest is that it allows you to do push ups and pull ups with it on which will also help you at. If you have any more questions or anything leave me a comment. Hope this helps
Samson, you are right in what you are saying about the sweatshirt, but I would also like to add that cutting too much weight in this fashion is not a healthy thing to do. The fighters that do it are doing it just for the weigh ins, then they hydrate themselves back again.
If you're looking to burn more calories, then just run faster or put the front of the treadmill on a pile of books or something.
Derek, I completely agree, I'm sorry if it sounded like i was advocating it. Its a very bad thing especially if youre doing it on shift then get a fire you'll gas out. Thanks for clarifying what i was trying to say Derek.
No and No...calories burned are a result of work not what you wear...yes, wearing a weighted vest will require more effort threfore will burn more...Do you want to burn calories as in loss of weight or in trying to kill yourself...? This is NOT a good idea...you should ease into a regular workout and then gradually increase it...A weight loss of a lb or two a week is considered by many to be optimal....Good luck....(I'm in the same boat)...
I am down 36 pounds since I got back with the program in late February. I did it through working out and eating healthier. I try do do something in the weight room every day, allowing myself a day off on the weekend. I also walk an average of 2 to 3 miles a day with my dogs. That walk takes longer ( stop, sniff, pee, poop, repeat.... the dogs, not me! ; ^ )

When I do cardio on the treadmill, I either wear the weight vest and set the speed at a minimum of 4 mph, max of 4.5 and do at least a mile or set it at 5 to 6 without the vest and run the a mile. I've tried the elliptical machine, but I can' seem to get into it.

I'll do three to 4 miles on the lifecycle bike in lieu of the treadmill.

Hi my name is Felicia and I use to be a fitness trainer until I started training to be a firefighter and fell in love with it. The sweat shirt statement is not true and it is really bad for your body. You will lose water weight however losing it this way holds toxins close to your body and keeps the sweat from evaperating like it should. Depending on what results you are looking for the treadmil may not be your best bet. If you are doing the calorie counting type thing the cross trainer is much more effective. Treadmils are actully really bad on your knees and the band as it continues to push your feet/legs back does some of the work for you so your legs are not getting the full workout on your legs that you would think. If you do go out side to do your walking/running stay on the grass and sand. This gives your legs a full and harder workout and is much better on the knees..
As for the vest, I bought one not long ago and love it! I have one that is made for females more so but my only complaint with it is that when I run it tends to strangle me on the neck even if I use the weights and try to get the weight to even out it still has issues. However the weight vest I used for Greenville's test was awesome. It was a full chest weight, you couldn't change the weight on it like mine but it reminded me of a bullet vest for LEO. I think these are easier to find and probably cheaper as well.
For your arms like you were refering too with the lifting weights while on the treadmil a good in-expensive way to work your arms is the door gym, it's made by Gold's Gym. It cost about 20 and fits on door frames and can do so much with it pull ups, sit ups, and make up all kinds of other stuff to work your upper body and it is so simple.

Since everybody is all over the sweatshirt thing, I'll leave that alone.

As far as the weight vest goes, we use our SCBA's. Either on a treadmill, or walking our pre-measured loops(.5 mile, 1 mile and 2 mile).

My personal regimen is:

1.5 mile walkj/jog 6 mornings/week
90 minute workout on weights 6 evenings/week
1-1.5mile jog/fast walk with an SCBA 2 days a week.

I've been at it since the end of Feb. and I'm down about 35 pounds with about 35 more to go!
