JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. - A firefighters union has filed a complaint against Jeffersonville over how the city measures sit-ups in the department's fitness test.

The union contract requires firefighters to complete a certain number of sit-ups, push-ups and a 2-mile run. But union President David Kaskie says city officials can't decide whether abdominal crunches count as sit-ups.

Kaskie says the union met with city officials in January to discuss the fitness standard and was told abdominal crunches would be used for the sit-up portion of the test. Members who were tested later had to do full sit-ups.

A firefighter who failed the test three times has filed a grievance. It now goes to the Jeffersonville Fire Merit Commission.

The grievance is about the type of exercise... you can't have one group doing crunches and another full situps.
Pick one or the other..
How about scrap this test all together and adopt something like the combat challenge or even CPAT, a physical test that at least mirrors the job duties.

The problem with such a test like this is that someone can be great on push ups, sit ups, and even running, but it lacks resembelance to actual fireground job duties. That same person who aces such a test like this may not pass a CPAT, may not be able to drag a dummy, advance a line, force entry, etc...all while wearing weight by either PPE or a weighted vest, which can have an affect on test outcome.
Fair and equitable for all. The test was agreed upon and then sounds like it was changed. It is called holding them to their word. Or in this case.... the contract. Ohh thats right many here don't like that stuff.
I agree whole heartedly with you Chris. I believe it should be given at the volly level as well.
The CPAT should be used, as it more accurately reflects the tasks that must be performed on the fireground.
