MOSS POINT, Miss. - A Moss Point firefighter has requested assistance from the NAACP after he said he found a "hangman's noose" in his living quarters at the fire department.

Capt. Rodger Mann tells The Sun Herald Thursday that he first reported the incident to the city on March 3, two days after he said he made the discovery.

He hasn't returned to work since, saying he's used up all of his accrued off time and has been refused further time off with pay despite a request to the city.

FBI Special Agent Tye Breedlove said that his agency had been informed of the incident, though he could neither confirm or deny whether they were investigating.

Un Be Fn leivable! WTF is the matter with those (_!_) holes down there? What year are we living in again?
An incident that allegedly occurred on March 3, 2010 took 15 days to make the papers?
I went to the Moss Point website and discovered that an African-American female is mayor.
Apparently; the website is under construction, because this is what I found out about the fire department: ..................

This was under their Human Resources Department: Human Resources

I am going to put this into the "runaway Prius" category until I see more on it.
i agree somneone is being a little softy, specially if you a cpt you ought to know bout the jokes meaning you been in a while, hell for all we know he could play the jokes on ppl and thencant take the heat back and got all mad like alot of our society is, but at same time prolly ought to get to know the man b4 u do a joke of this sort, well that my two cents whic aint worth much..
Chris and Brandon...I find it interesting that you both seem to think this was a joke. While it could have been I suspect that whomever left the noose most certainly did NOT intend it as a joke, at least not the kind that I would laugh at. I'm with the Chief on this one...prius file until more info.
This type of STORY needs to be taken seriously because of the many implications.
Whether true or not; the negatives are still there.
Whether Captain Mann is a victim or not; the news is out there to ponder.
Regardless; there is going to be fall out.
My other concern is: were there any precipitous acts by parties unknown that escalated to the "hangman's noose"?
Because let's face it; you don't work somewhere and are there long enough to rise to the rank of captain and one day...BOOM! A universal symbol for hate shows up.
So; either the act is a fabrication or there is more to the story than we currently know.
Definitely not the material jokes are made from, firehouse humour or not.
FROM A BRO TO A BRO YOU ARE RIGHT.
Wait....this IS 2010 correct, not 1940???

Déjà vu... anyone remember this post from 12-2009?

Another Noose?

This morning I read about yet another noose being discovered in either the locker or the personal belongings of a black firefighter somewhere in this country. It seems this noose-making is an odd trend in the fire service, as this is probably the third time I've read a story like this in the past year.

Why is racism, particularly racism against African Americans, so common in the fire service? (Remember: First responders are held to a higher standard, so if you do something once, like leave a noose in someone's locker, and it's reported, people will remember it and judge you for it for a long time.

I for one find this type of post sensational and have learned that the sole purpose of this type of post is to generate emotion from the readership... It's so predictable... Of course no one thinks this is a good thing and it's easy to push peoples buttons. I generated a post on this topic called, Should you respond to FFN posts that are designed to elicit emotion?

What I do love about this post however was Art's very descriptive phrase, "I am going to put this into the "runaway Prius" category until I see more on it." That's classic stuff...

Final thought... maybe the FFN writer that posted the original above noted post was not too far off the mark with her original story about nooses in the fire service... or are they truly isolated instances... The last post on this was December 2009, which at the time of this post makes it about 4-months. If this is the trend, that's maybe four noose incidents a year with the fire service... One is too many. I'll be putting this into Art's Runaway Prius category as well...

ok so I have to comment on those of you that think this may have been some type of joke. As a woman in fire service I too am a minority and while I can give as good as I get in terms of firehouse humour, there is an undertone that the average white male firefighter may not be aware of. A lot of things you say in life really come down to tone of voice. two people may tell the same questionable joke however one persons tone clearly says "isnt this so stupid its kinds funny" while the other persons tone has a harsh "this could be you" quality. So even if we go with the Joke Theory, the tone is all kinds of wrong. Do I think this is a joke that was taken the wrong way or went to far NO! This to me screams intimidation, and disgruntaled small minded co-worker. When all is said and done I wouldnt be surpised if the person found responsible is someone considered a "typical good ole boy" type Firefighter. And living in Ga I know some "good ole boys" that I have trusted with my life many times before and will again, and I have also met that 1-2% that think the Boys Club should stay that way. I hope this Captain stands his ground and knows that 98-99% in Fire Service would be proud to call him Brother.
Are you really saying that there is an appropriate time and place for this type of racism and ignorance? really? are you serious? You, my friend, are the motivation behind those huge lawsuits and discrimination classes. I thank God for alot everyday, but now I particularly thank Him that I do not work with you.
It is not surprising to me at all that this type of racism exists in today's society or in the so called "brotherhood" of the Fire Service. Unfortunately, every Firefighter of any particualr minority group deals with some form of racism, sexism, prejudice, and/or discrimination every single day of our career.
