For several years we have used the "Fire Pup" program by National Fire Safety Council. This program solicits for donations to your Depts. Fire Prevention program and in turn you receive Fire Prevention materials at no cost for dispersal to your children and community. How many of you are using it and whats your feelings or experiences with using them? Good and bad.
We don't have that exact program, but during fire prevention week, we go to our local school and put on demonstrations, and talk to all the kids about fire safety in the home. You know, stop, drop, and roll, don't play with matches, having a fire escape plan, etc. etc. Afterwards, we give out fire safety brochures, and tot finder stickers for their bedroom windows. After that, we eat lunch with the kids, and answer any questions they have about the fire department. This has also proven to be a good recruiting tool for picking up junior firefighters.
For those who are interested in this program, here is the web address - http://www.nfsc.org/
It is the National Fire Safety Council - Fire Pup program. Give them a look.
Jack, your absolutely right. We use the program to accomplish our Fire Prevention materials without having to fork out a large amount of money from my budget. However thats as far as we go. We do the same as what you do as to acclimating the kids as to what our firefighters look like from station wear to full PPE and SCBA. We used to use NFPA materials but when my budget was cut I had to find another source cause I couldnt afford to buy the materials. Fire Pup has sustained us for some time because of it.
thanks for the info i am in charge of the fire safety program we do at the local school, i have been trying to find something new for next year and not just do the same thing every year the kids get bored with the same stuff all the time
