We have 9 stations in our parish and only 15 vols. Out of those only about 7 are active in the operations and respond to scenes. I haqve talked to younger and older people and they just givre you the answer you want to hear and never show up.

I guess like most questions what programs does your area use to promote volunteerism to bring in new people?
About the only thig we have is a points system where you get paid so much per point on runs you make. There are only 6 of us that are paid counting the full time Chief and the rest are partime 35 hrs. Word of mouth and just talking to people are about it.
A couple of questions for you. What is your call volume like during a typical year? Do you have the base in your community in which you can draw volunteers from? Do you have local high school to begin a explore program with? Is there the opportunity for vols to get picked up even if it is at a Part time basis? There are a lot of recruitment and retentation techinques that you can use. But, more background information is needed.
it is hard to find any volunteers anymore..manpower is very hard to get..
Calls very,we are on an average of 1 to 2 calls a day. We may go a week without a call then have 5 or 6 the next day.Even though we are part time we are having to answer all calls because we have nobody else to go. I will get with the Chief o n the explore program. As of right now no way to get picked up unless someone quiets or get fired.
Yes, I know when you ask someone to join the fire dept. the first thing they say is how much does it pay. So they tell you yes but you never see them again.
It is hared to get new recruits these days I have found that fore every 10 you get abut 5 stay until there are trained and out of that you may get 1 or 2 that stay more then a few years.

Everyone goes home
William, you just have to keep plugging away at recruitment and retention. It is always a issue to keep your volunteer ranks adequately staffed and ready. It is up to us to keep them motivated and enthused about being part of a active organization. We are always looking at new and innovative ways to keep people active and involved.
That's ll we can do is keep trying and go with the flow.
Thanks to everyone for their input. We will keep trying.
Thanks to everyone for their input on this continuing problem. If any new ideas come up post them and we will try and se what we get. Thanks again for the helpto this problem.
We have the same problem here in Reno...our department has varied from 20 members to five...part of this may have been issues with particular members, but still, it's hard to recruit and retain members
