NYS has apparently came up with a new DMV law about 4 years ago and forgot to tell anybody.. So now you can't drive your fire truck back from a fire call or go to a parade unless you have a CDL.
Our station may have to go "out of service" until we can match this requirement although NYS Association of Fire Chiefs think they have control over all of the volunteer stations. We do not have the funds or the manpower to meet this requirement. Our Governor is too busy with cuts to the budget to tackle this problem at this time.
In cali u have to have a CDL class B fire fighter at least to drive the engines and trucks our dept has patrols that carry 300 gal and u dont have to have the class B just a drivers license..
WHEN I WAS ON MY DEPARTMENT, I WAS AN ENGINEER. KENTUCKY DOESN'T REQUIRE A CDL TO OPERATE ENGINES. BUT, WHAT I DID FIND OUT WAS IF YOU WANTED A CDL-B LICENSE, ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS GET THE PAPERWORK FROM YOUR LOCAL LICENSE EXAM OFFICE AND TAKE IT TO YOUR CHIEF AND HAVE HIM FILL IT OUT STATING THAT YOU HAVE BEEN AN OPERATOR IN THE DEPARTMENT. THIS EXEMPTED YOU FROM ALL THE OTHER TESTS, YOU ONLY HAD TO TAKE THE WRITTEN TEST.
I'm sorry but do you know this to be true? I am from Kentucky and was on a paid department and our drivers had to take the full test, driving and written.
I believe this situation has been or is about to be resolved to revert back to the original script. As you can see, we have had a very educated discussion on the need for a CDL or not to. The Volunteer Service here in the State has been very patient awaiting our lawmakers to move their butts on this issue, But we have had a few stumbling blocks, like the hurry to get Gay Marriage passed, and Subway Tolls increased, along with most of our taxes, and don't let me forget about fee's increased, including a Commercial Driver's License. So as we stand on the sidelines and watch Albany work their well paid butts off, we drive illegally. If they don't move soon, don't worry about having a parades for them to prance around in this year.... LMAO
Well for us we are exempt in Pa from the cdl but have to have EVOC. In my department all apparatus drivers will take an EVOC refresher course every two years. No one under 21 can drive a company vehicle dictated by our insurance carrier. To get qualified to drive a rig the trainee has to drive a minimum of 10 hours, more if the head driver trainer feels it is necessary. The trainee must attend and receive a pump 1 certification and have 5 hours of pump operation, more if needed. For the ladder, 10 hours driving, and must set jacks and set main at 10 different locations. They must drive a rig for six months to calls and drills before being allowed to start training on the next rig. Each driver must drive a minimum of 12 hours a year. The hours can be combined among all vehicles they are qualified to drive. They must operate the pumps a minimum of 1 hour and operate the outriggers and main. If a driver is involved in an accident with a rig, they are immediately removed from driving status until the investigation committee clears them to drive again. They also have a blood test taken immediately after the accident. We take very serious the responsibility of driving vehicles of this size.
Anyone looking for a good usd Fire Truck, you might find one sitting on the side of the road
in New York left behind because they had no one to drive it back to the station. All you need is a
CDL, and you can drive it home today. LOL "What a dumb law"
Please.... stop me from laughing.... at one point here come soon, we are going to have to get our heads out of the sand and stand up and say enough is enough. They have again put us on the back burner as the memory's of 9/11 fade. But now comes a new threat... Swine Flu.... and our volunteer and career first responders will be on the front line again. Nowhere has the thought of how to protect us has come up yet.
In my opinion this law is shit. I can drive at 16 and become a firefighter at 18 why can i not drive a fire truck?
Multiple people have made mention of low budgets and not being able to pay for this... What about these departments that can't afford to get turnouts, there is no way they can foot that bill. A Career dept may be able to since not everyone is a driver but a volly dept come on now. this is way out of control....
Romulus, not to be disrespectful, But you used the words " As 9-11 fades away " I am from New York
and I take that as a insult to my friends that past away making the ultimate sacrafice, along with our
343 brother. I am hoping that 9-11 will never fade away, for they shall always be remembered.
