Note: Also posted in the volunteer group.

At our department we're planning a remodel in the coming year and I'm on the committee to decide what things to improve or change. Here's a brief rundown of the building:
40x80 1 1/2 story metal building
4 - 15 foot bays with manual roll up doors
kitchen and meeting area at one end of the building
day room and chiefs office above the kitchen
small storage area at the rear of the building
small male and female restroom
We're in SE Texas by the way and a all volunteer rural department.

What I'd like to know is this:
Is there something you don't have in your station that you wish you did? and/or Is there something you have but rarely use?

Any inputs would be a great help.

Thanks in advance,

Shawn

I'd like to see use get the truck exhaust system for our hall, the ones that detatch from the truck by itself, it's a life saver in the long run
We are also remodeling our station. Well I should say the mayor is having our station remodeled and not letting us have a say in what we want or need. So far he fixed up two of the four bathrooms in our station removed our storage closet where the gear was locked up at and put in a shower and locker room which we dont need because we are all volunteer and would go home to shower anyways. But on the other hand we are getting a larger kitchen, meeting room, office, and some more storage.
get automatic door openers you will never regret it , and floor drains in the center of every stall. i designed our station and we added the door openers but the floor drains should have been a no brainer. i said i didnt want any leaking trucks but some one is always leaving a valve on or a cap loose
Thanks to everyone who has replied so far. Some really good ideas. Keep 'em coming!
We did a remodel of our fire house in 1999. We had a 40 x 100' Atlantic building, but demolished it and added a 60 x 40 Morton wood/steel building to let us expand from 2 truck bays to 6. We also added an SCBA/EMS room, lounge, chief's office, and a unisex bathroom with shower.

We ran all kinds of telephone and communications wire so we have a phone and house radio speaker in each room. The main bathrooms were enlarged and made handicapped-accessible.

Things we should have done:

- Add a small conference room for private "chats" or "counseling sessions" for members requiring discipline

- Rework the kitchen to bring it into compliance with code, i.e. proper range hood with exhaust and extinguishment system; larger refrigerator/freezer units for food storage; bigger sinks; automatic dishwasher (required per health laws)

- Refinish the banquet hall to add a floor covering, suspended ceiling and wallboard.

The food storage part would be great for those times after a fire, when everyone's tired and hungry, stores and other places are closed, and members need to be fed. A place to cook and serve it is also required.

You should try to see where your department might be in 10 to 20 years and plan for that.

This was going to be my main point. My dept got a brand new station 20 years ago. At the time, running 2 3-man engines it was fine. But now add a duty chief, 2 private paramedics and it seems small. Try to build for the future too. Do you foresee needing a truck co. in a few years? if you don't have one now, an ambulance or 2. You will run out of space real fast.
