Just wondering what everyones opinion is on brush trucks. Which is better dually or single wheel rear axle? Our dept. debated this and decided on single wheel rear axle.

I would rather have duel because it hold wait alot better also if you have a four wheel drive brush truck it would go better off road in my oppinion which Ithink is what a brush truck is for. Also feel free to add me to your page
Our department just recently replaced 2 trucks with 1. Our Grass truck and our Rescue truck put into 1 truck. A Chevy 2500 Duromax Diesel with allison transmission. I haven't took it on a grass or brush fire call yet but this truck will do pretty much everything that we need it to do. Guess it all depends on your location, how large of a district you have, whats your average response time. That would help you decide how large of a truck you would need. 1000 gal tank for a grass truck is rather large if you ask me but you could need it where you are I guess.
we have a lot of fields in our district and duallys usually get stuck and our 4x4 has to pull them out.
when you get offroad dullys couldnt even come close to comparing to reliabilty as single. They get stuck way 2 easy, its better to go with single wider tires
We used whatever was available, the Sheriff in our county gave us a surplus truck his department had purchased. It is a 1 ton Chevrolet pickup which we put a 300 gallon tank and a 250 gal pump. We installed 2-3/4 inch hand lines and when we run our pump on low speed we can stretch the water out for a while. We installed a quick fill system for our tank where we can fill tank from the ground without having to climb on truck.The truck is a single rear wheel and it does just fine on and off road.
Well I wish I could say but we lost our brush unit to our sister station because they couldn't get theirs fix, and they uses statistcs to show our brush unit only ran three brush fires. Course I don't know how we will get to the brush fire off road but its no longer my problem. We had a Ford F-150 with four wheel drive with 150 gallon tank and plenty of garden hose.
Right now we run 76 Chevy step side that will go almost anywhere we point it, it has a 200gal tank and an old 80gpm pump on it. It is tired so we will be replacing it with a 08 Ford F-350 over the winter. We went with a single rear tire again (dually to wide) and a ford this time for the ground clearance. Lots of rocks and hills to climb in our area.
Both have advantages and disadvantages, and the answer would also depend on the terrain they will be used on. Dual wheel vehicles do handle weight better than single wheel vehicles. They are usually on heavier chassis therefore there may be a trade-off as to where they can go. Maintenance cost will be a little higher with the bigger chassis. As far as a 4x4, again a lot would depend on your terrain. With the type of "gumbo" soil we have in the Houston, TX area, you can bury a tank. Out here, four wheel drive just gets you 4 foot further, and 4 foot deeper.
We took our attack truck and made it into a brush truck recently. It is dual rear wheels. We havent got the chance to use it yet but if it goes half as good as it did when it was an attack truck.......we wont have any trouble. That truck was put into places that only atv's would attempt during brush fires.
Single rear axle with dual wheels if going with a pickup type mini pumper. Military surplus will most likely be Single Axle Single wheel. You should spec out what you want on the truck, and the weights, and then determine which layout of axles is appropriate compared to your needs. Looks are only good if they go with a truck that preforms as it should. A parade piece that serves you no good deserves to be in a scrapyard. (unless it's an antique)
we currently have a '74 dodge power wagon 4x4 which can get through almost anything plus it has to pull out surrounding departments that get stuck in there dually's. our new one will be an '08 f-350 4x4, just have to wait and see what it can do.
we just got a new brush truck last year a ford f450 duely v10(gas guzzler) 325 gal tank 3bumber sprayers 1 booster and 2 3foot sections on each side and its pretty good except for being a duely the front sprayers are awsome but four wheel drive is on every feild we r in
