Why is Fire fighter1 & 2 Important (Volunteer department)
If you have been in FF1 or 2 and pass do you think it is Important for others on your department to do the same?

Well Mathew, in the USA volunteers make up what, over 90% of FF's? Sounds like the vollies might be ahead in the LODD stakes. Which doesn't mean anything. All firefighters need to be trained, and well trained. Whether they be paid or unpaid. And training can stop the day you leave the service, not before.

That would be great...A standard training that holds up in all 50 states. I mived from NJ to GA a few years ago and had to start clean. But, I think it was a good thing. I know a lot more now than I did when I moved here. I was amazed at how much we can forget in just a few short years.
As for the 90% thing, thanks. I didn't know that we made up such a large %. I honestly thought it was closer to 70%. However, I'm glad we all agree that this is an important and needed task. -Matt

in my opinion, you don't step on a rig without it. the county i ride in (and i'm pretty sure it's this way throughout all of maryland), you need fire1, haz-mat ops, bloodborne pathogens, and cpr/aed. we still need to be cleared by our lead LT even after taking the class too.

I have a nice easy way of keeping up with changes. I'm a trainer - and before I deliver a subject, no matter what level it's at, I study the classwork. Can be surprising what has changes can sneak up on you.

So, if I understand it correctly:
If I was from Illinois and was hired in your state as the chief of the fire department, then all of my certifications would technically be no good?
What about all of my years on the fire ground? Didn't happen?
Why is the concept of accreditation so hard for states?
If I graduate from Illinois State with a teaching degree, they will let me teach anywhere in the United States.
It is ridiculous that we still have to fight to carry fire/EMS to other states.
Somehow; I can't but feel that MONEY drives this and not competency.

i think that everyone who is in a volunteer or city firedepartment shouold be level 1 or 2 for the reasons of safty it teaches you alot on the history and knowlege in the fire service it teaches how things work and how it should be operated

Well in Nj you have to have FF1 and I think they should make FF2 mandatory also. This is our lives we are talking about and FF1 is basics and alot of volley companies don't get fires that much to train in so they don't get alot of experince. FF2 teaches alot of important things that should be known. I think all depts should require that you take atleast 1 class per year. THe day I stop learning in the fire service is the day I either hang up my helmet or die

I've had that same thought Art. If they an have a national standard for EMT, then why not for Fire Service certs?

If I were to fathom a guess, I'd say that it's because the NVFC hasn't put it at the top of their list. If they have, I must have missed it.
Why is it that, just a couple of years ago, when they sunk our state EMT test, they quickly replaced it with the National Registry, with its limited test sites, tougher test and higher fees. It caused quite a stir. But we perservered.
And there were even some states that would not recognize the National standard. Go figure.
In a culture where the big national organizations want a cookie cutter brand of firefighter, there are no national certification standards for firefighters.
And don't say "NFPA". It doesn't begin to address a firefighter's skill sets.
Ah, I'd better stop. I wouldn't want to upset our buddies at the national level. After all, they have our best interests at heart.
I'm not a union member, but I have plenty of friends who are and I can tell you without hesitation that, without the sustained efforts of the IAFF, we'd still be throwing buckets of water at the fires.
