I have been appointed the safety officer for my department. I need to give a "safety talk" every month at our meeting. I'm looking for some ideas on what to talk about and a way to approach the subject so the department will listen and take heed.

Some of my ideas I would like to discuss are: Seat belts, Winter/Summer rehab, the accountability system, PPE maintanence, Wildland fire attack, Safety equipment on vehicle collisions and physical conditioning.

I would appreciate any input regarding any of these topics or any others that should be taken to the crew. Also, any sites that I can use to research and plan my attack!

Watch the reports at firefighternearmiss.com and Chief Goldfeder's secret list, also on firefighternearmiss.com. They will offer some good and timely safety topics.

Also, as Brannigan said, the building is your enemy... know your enemy. Study building construction and specifically preplan the buildings in your area.

And think about other potential incidents you may encounter. Those related to railroads, highways, airports, industrial processes, etc. Preplanning now can prevent a lot of headaches down the road.

Good luck.

Okay, well I had my 1st safety report. Um, it's amazing how they don't like change. Well, at least the Chief is backing me with trying to get the rehab started on fire scenes. I guess we'll see how it goes. Wish me luck!

Andy, I was talking w/one of my EMT's on the department and he was concerned about having any medical information on the members. Do we need to have waivers of release signed to keep that information with the chief?

Don't forget to send an invitation to other sister companies. Maybe they can share your knowledge and then reciprocate, somewhat reducing your burden.

Also, what I do - I have your same role - is go through the monthly fire magazines - there is ALWAYS a column in one with a good safety tip - often with photos. My last one was about not staning in front of bumpers at car fires, and I showed photos of the piston that went through the FFs leg. Also the daily Firehouse.com page . . . just today the story of a FF killed yesterday w/out a seatbelt - a peerfect example for your class. My 'OPINION' is to stay at levels where an individual can make a change or a difference for him/herself. PPE inspection, yes, wildfire attack, no - too broad, I'd leave that for someone else to teach and you pipe up with key safety points. Because you will reach some and not others, no matter what. Andy
