ANSONIA, Ohio -- Residents in the Darke County village of Ansonia, population 1,145, are mourning the death of Police Chief Larry Hoffman.

The 56-year-old Hoffman was found dead late Thursday night inside the police headquarters on West Canal Street after he failed to answer his radio.

Darke County Deputy Detective Sgt. Mark Whittaker confirmed Friday morning that the sheriff's department and the Darke County Coroner's Office are investigating Hoffman's death. Whittaker said, "Evidence found at the scene indicates that the chief died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"
Hoffman, a well-respected law enforcement officer since the early '70s, had spend many years on the Ansonia police department and served as chief for many years. He also worked as a corrections officer with the Darke County Sheriff's Department and as a 911 dispatcher.

Hoffman and his wife Judy, just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Nov. 12. They have two adult children.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Crystal,

I'm sorry to hear about this tragedy. Chief Hoffman seemed to have had public service in his heart serving all those years. I'm sure understanding of this will be long coming and in the mean time my prayers go to his family, friends and co-workers. TCSS

Scott ...you ignorant ass...Don't you have more common sense than to make a comment like this in a public forum..? The man's family and friends could very well read something like this...they have enough to deal with don't you think..?? OOPS...answered my own question..you obviously DON'T think....You really don't know the situation nor do you know the man...don't be so quick to judge 30 plus years on the job says something...depression can hit anyone.....Paul
