Lots of emotions to begin the shift with rememberance of 9/11 and watching video of that day. I was glad when we started getting alarms. We had to fill Station 14 because both of their units went on the third alarm to a building fire. I'm glad we had to fill because we picked up a nice vehicle fire. Every vol dept is different too. Some get more funding due the tax base and can afford the better training programs and incentives that bring in the volunteers.
Our biggest issue is that we are such a small town and everyone is either under 20 or over 40.
The under 20s dont want to do it and the over 40s dont have the time to work 40 hrs a week 35 miles a way and still go on calls at 2 am as a vol.
We do the best we can...honestly I think sometimes that the county should consolidate all the vol depts under the pervue of the one paid dept in the city - 35 miles away.
Cross training would improve as would the organization of bodies and equipment.
