How to help the family of EMT Yadira "Yari" Arroyo

EMT Yadira Arroyo (L) EMT Monique Williams (R) FDNY EMS Sta. 26, Bronx, NY

New York City is in mourning after the city lost one of its heroes on 3/16/17. EMT Yadira "Yari" Arroyo, 44, a 14 year veteran from FDNY EMS Station 26 was doing what she did every day, attend to others. Shortly after 7PM while in her ambulance responding to a call for a woman in labor pains, a man hailed the ambulance because another man had stolen his backpack and jumped on the rear of the ambulance using it as a getaway. Arroyo stopped the ambulance to investigate and was attacked by Jose Gonzalez, 25. Arroyo and her partner, EMT Monique Williams, 31 tried to fight off Gonzalez, but he managed to get in the ambulance and drove off. Arroyo tried to retake the vehicle, but Gonzalez reversed it hitting her with the open door and then ran her over. Put it in drive and ran over her a second time, dragging her several feet. He continued driving until hitting three parked cars, finally crashing into a snow bank at White Plains Road and Watson Ave in the Morris Park Section of the Bronx. Immediately, bystanders rushed to apprehend Gonzalez, including an off-duty MTA police officer who was driving by. Arroyo's partner, Williams, was so distraught that she kicked and stomped the perpetrator as he lay on the street. She was later taken to Jacobi Medical Center for shock, neck and shoulder injuries. Gonzalez was arraigned in the Bronx Criminal Court and being held without bail, was met with hundreds of EMT workers who shouted down at him and his lawyer. By coincidence, Gonzalez lived just a block away from Arroyo in a supevised homeless shelter. He was found to have marijuana and PCP in his system at the time of this incident. He has a long rap sheet and is said to be mentally unstable and an alleged gang member. He even has two open cases for assaulting a security guard and a police officer. Thirty One prior arrests, he shouldn't have even been on the streets! This time he is being charged with murder. Arroyo, a single mom leaves behind five children, ages 7 to 24 who are suffering the loss of their dear mother. All but one were able to say goodbye to her before she expired at Jacobi Medical Center. A hard and dedicated worker, she was working overtime that day just to make ends meet. Please pray for the repose of the soul of Yadira Arroyo. She is a hero in every respect of the word. Arroyo saved lives as an EMT and prevented this deranged individual from possibly hurting or killing others. Truly above and beyond! On 3/25/17, she was laid to rest with full FDNY honors, in a ceremony that was attended by thousands of civilians and members of service, a testament to how much she meant to the community she served so well. Arroyo is the eighth female and 1,146th member line of duty death in the history of the FDNY. Please also pray for her partner Monique Williams, another hero, that she may have peace of mind. She will certainly be traumatized for life by this tragic incident. Take the time to also say a prayer for EMTs and Paramedics everywhere, for theirs is not an easy job. Please also pray for her sons and if possible, consider donating to the Arroyo Children's Fund being set up by the NY Daily News through the FDNY Foundation. Please go to Please note that there are many Go Fund Me sites being set up, this organization is legit. Thank you!
