About Me:
I have a 6 year old daughter named Isabella, and have been married now for almost 7 years. I love the fire service and all who respect it the way I do, and will be striving to bring back the standards of training and respect for senior members that it use to have, but somehow got misplaced...
But hey...If your daddy is chief and your last name has history in the dept you are safe for now. Bring back respect, and brotherhood...please.

I Believe...
That credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.

The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
They just make the most of everything.
Day Job:
Fire Safety Rep. for the State of New York
Relationship Status:
Married
Why I Joined Fire/EMS
I joined the fire service to help those in need during times of disaster, even if its simply retrieving their family pictures from the wall of their burning home. Im here for whoever needs me. I dont need bars on my shirt or a different color helmet to make me have honor and pride in what I do.
Why I Love Fire/EMS
I live to make others happy, and help all who need it, and I love the training, brotherhood, and the feeling that I belong.
Top Issues Facing Responders:
I will probably be stoned to death for saying this but I feel passionately about it and maybe it will generate some support for this issue; I feel that Firefighter I & II should be State License's and need to be re-certified every 3-5 years like the NYS EMT license's. Not enough people refresh their training and its scary...VERY scary, to see guys who took "Essentials" 20+ years ago but have not attended any further or refresher training and feel they do not need to. THATS one of the top issues I feel in todays fire service.
Lack of training standards, volunteers with not enough time to train properly that get doctored through the system and end up being Chief at the age of 25. Lost Traditions, lack of respect of the elders and officers, Manpower issues, and equipment issues.

Like your comments in Top Issues Facing The Fire service . I think they mirror some of mine. Take a look and see what you think. Just sent a request. Don't GLOW to much. Jim

Your very welcome Moose. Don't let it get you down. I deal with some of the same stuff at departments I teach for and at my own department. There are those just along for the ride. Make it available for them, they will bite or pass, just like a catfish. My problem at my department is not my command staff, but the firefighters (mostly new with some old foggies too) that say "oh, this is just..... we don't need all that stuff". Alot of the attitude is not really there fault, it is generational in some regards and the old administrations attitude too. It will take time for the progressive staff to change attitudes. I know your problem is with management and members. Don't give up, hold in there. Give it more time to develope. Show them by example. Take care brother and look forward to talking further with you too. How about looking into coming down to Penn when we do the next
Mason-Dixon Trench Weekend. Really like to meet you. Jim

Just a little scenerio with two victims inside.

I live in Winston-Salem , North Carolina. I teach here and in Penn, Delaware, Maryland, and SC. Do a search on google or other for the Mason-Dixon Trench Weekend. It was in the spring the last few years after moving from the fall. Got caught up in flooding and 911 in the fall, so they moved to spring. Now they are thinking about changing the time of year again. It is run through HACC (harrisburg area community college in Penn) . Also googe Hanover FD in the Borough of Hanover, Penn for info. This program moved to Penn from Baltimore County , Maryland in 2000.
  • Jim

I think it has been $95.00 per student for in state the last few years. Don't know what they charge out of state. We have gotten folks from NY for years coming to the program. I would incourage you to come down, bring a group if you can, but if they aren't interested, it is there lose. Sometimes you have to just get it own your own, know what I mean? Ha Ha ! Let me know, might be able to get you put up in a firehouse. I also teach the Farmedic Program. If you haven't taken it, I would incourage you to add it to your extrication training. Both of these programs are done in about 20 hours over a weekend (Fri night classes, and hands on all day sat and sun)

Hi Jeff, I've been learning the site for the past three months as I have been recovering from knee surgery. Blew out my right one on a wildland fire a couple of months back. Had the surgery and now life is starting to finally get back to normal for me. This has given me the time to spend getting to know a lot of folks around the world. Something that you may also find really rewarding. This week I started a new group called Hazmat WMD Responders. Please check out the site for some cool stuff that I've been collecting for over 25 years since first getting involved with hazmat. I think you might find some of the shared information really useful. If it's old news, sure could use some input, specially with providing AHLS for hazmat team members that accidentally get exposed... Stay safe! Mike from Santa Barbara, CA, USA
  • Mike Schlags (Captain Busy) Retd

thanks for the ad brother, adorable photos of the kids, you have 4? I've got 3 but they are now 17, 19 and 21, all girls... looks like your a brother Cobra... my best, mike
  • Mike Schlags (Captain Busy) Retd

so, am I right in assuming that you went through the Cobra training in Anniston?
  • Mike Schlags (Captain Busy) Retd

Yes, that's the same training. Have you heard much or know much about the training?

Also, what do you know about the advanced tech training. I'm assuming it requires the Cobra training first. I attended the training in 2003 and put together a website to share the experience with others. Here it is...

    http://www.silcom.com/~pordecon/2003_cobra3.htm

If you were not familiar with the specifics of the training, you are now... Hope you find this helpful. Give me a shout anytime if I can be of assistance. Mike

PS: What I did not like in the least was the part when they drew bloods...

I hate needles... and was a paramedic for 15 years...

  • Mary Ellen Shea

that comment you made on Jim's page doesn't mean I have to start being nice to you now, does it?
    :)
That was a beautifully written and thoughtful comment--nicely done.
  • Mike Schlags (Captain Busy) Retd

I'm back to work, working in our logistics section, four 10's. The department is PR'ing me to do this full time when I get released for full duty in a month. I wish I was going back to Anniston. It will be the best training program that you will ever attend in your career. You will truly enjoy meeting and working with people from all over the country.
  • Jim Brunelle Jr.

    Brian,

  • Jonathan Spencer

Hi Brian, thanks for the friend request. I hope you be ok, see you.
  • Lew Kofler

I see you are another Long Islander that made your way to Cobleskill FD. I saw you were with 2-9-0 Northport KEF577. I used to love listening to some of the dispatchers from there. I grew up in Kings Park but volunteered for Commack Ambulance(2-16-0) I volunteered for Cobleskill FD Rescue when I went to SUNY from 1988-1990 Had some good times there. A whole different world from Suffolk County.
  • Lew Kofler

I never got a chance to take a tour of the station. When I got to the station the engine and ladder were leaving, but I walked to the back of the station and the bay door was open so I snapped some pictures. It looked just like it did on television. I also took some pictures of station 110 and boat 110 in Marina Del Ray which was featured in a few of the episodes as well as the Steel Inferno movie. I took those pictures with a regular camera so I still have to scan them and post them here. I also got to meet the cast down in Hyattsville Maryland when they had the Project 51 where they brought the restored squad 51 to the smithsonian for display. I have a poster autographed by Randy Mantooth, Mike Stoker, Tim Donelly(Chet), Marco Lopez and Ron Pincard(Dr Morton). I then met Randy again 2 summers ago when he was the guest at a fire department picnic at one of the fire departments here in Monroe County. The picture that is on my profile is from then. I also had him autograph my replica Squad 51 helmet. I also have the code 3 station 51 with the squad, Crown pumper and Ward LaFrance pumper. I am also a member of the Los Angeles County Fire Museum Association.

Hi Brian, It wanted in these so special days, to give the thanks for all it received, to build a place where can be with all my family and friends, those of fence and the from a distance. The ones that have accompanied me always and the of now. Those that I see each day and the ones that seldom Find. The ones that have accompanied me in the difficult moments, and the of the happy hours. Those to whom I know deeply, and those to whom I know barely by their appearances. To the ones that without wanting I wounded and the ones that without wanting they wounded me. The ones that owe me and those to whom I owe them a lot. The same old they recalled, and the ones that at times are forgot me. You want to recall to all the ones that passed through my life and to desire them some happy festivals, that can find the peace that need and to enjoy the love of their families and of those that love them. That the Hope, The Love and the Peace Flourish for all You…

Hi Brian - all I can say is don't believe eveything you hear! Doug was a great guy and an incredible fire instructor I took Incident command with him - I really miss working w/ him. CEO is a great job - at least thh concept, ruined by too many politics where they don't belong - I wish you luck with it.
I see some posts about Glen Ridge in your profile - what is your tie there? We sponsor a car there - #17 Tommy Varin (I am ECLIPSE Overhead Doors) at the track most every Friday! Small world!! nice to hear from you

Nice to meet you, stay safe
  • Jack/dt

Brian, no worries, it was not directed at you but rather the "firefighter" that was being discussed by the OP (the female with the attitude), as well as at others that seem to think they can do, say and act however they please because they are 'volunteers.'

I don't trash volunteers, only "volunteer attitudes." Clearly you don't fall into the "volunteer attitude."
  • April Iachetta

i live 30min from rochester and 30 min from buff. NY right in beteween them is my location
  • Bruce Lawrence

Hey Cap...Send me a message. Our department is in the process of starting to spec out a new engine and our old engine is a HME FFA, I think the model is a penetrator...but not positive I am the Rescue Driver. The engine is 15 years old but we have records for everything done on it and to it by a major repair facility that Pierce authorizes to do their factory service here in our area...The few times I have driven it, it handles very well, the pump is strong and just passed inspection this past October.  1500 gal tank, and 1250 gpm pump. More of a long term solution for you guys...but it is a good engine taken care of by a fairly busy engine company. We had to know it was going to work when we headed out and made sure the maintenance was done on it religiously. Good luck in your apparatus search!

  • Russ Marks

Hey Moose, thanks for accepting, I think and you and I think alike based on your posts.  Sometimes I dont respond right away. not ingoring folks just dont visit here often. Its that time thing.

    Stay safe

    Russ

  • Russ Marks

I am with you in your RANTING, the public doesnt care if your paid, just that you do your job.  We have members that get to a point and then think they can start missing training.  I have found that alot of Vol Officers dont think they have the same legal libalities as paid Officers and are shocked to think OSHA may come knocking if someone is injured.  We have to have standards to ensure we stay safe.
