Enjoyed volunteering my time for different things, but when I came across a PR event for the search and rescue K9 unit, I knew it was perfect for me. I hiked, backpacked and camped by myself and my dogs. Here was the opportunity for me to do what I loved, with people that did the same and there was a purpose as well.
Why I Love Fire/EMS
The ultimate purpose of saving lives or bringing closure. The bond between my K9 partner and the bond within the team(s).
I am quite pleased by this site and I am looking forward to visiting everyone that has invited me to include them on my page. I will certainly be looking up the K9 pages. As soon as I figure out all the ins and outs of making up a page here, I will do so. Visit my site on Myspacecom/outdoork9lady until then. Everyone stay safe out there. Bless all those that put our lives on the line for others, even when the budget and the public aren't always there for us.
Hi Margaret, I stumbled across your photos of working with your K9 partner tonight. Very cool. Our department does have a water rescue team, but I have yet to us work with a K9 on the water. I would be curious to see that in action. Stay safe and keep up the good work.
The pointy eared dog has a nice sheppard name, Apollo! Can't name a shepard fluffy or something like that. Badger is an old (my kid will agree with that!) nickame of mine
Also have a floppy eared Golden (non-search). My youngest comes out to play during trainng, and loves the debate over floppy vs pointed eared dogs. Came back from a fire one day to find that he had taped one of Apollo's ears down!! He figured if Apollo had one ear each way, he would be perfect.
Actually I was in the mortgage industry in San Jose and here up until a few years ago. I love NC but I miss CA also. I spent a lot of time camping up in the Stanislaus mtns and probably miss that the most!
Yep, I really enjoy the search work. I have 2 yellow labs, Boomer is 9 and Zeus is 2. As I can see from your pic you work a pointy eared. FYI Boomer is in the Dog heroes of Sept 11th book.
Thanks for the very kind words. My writing is my therapy and I'm hoping to continue. Encouragement such as you've shown by your comment helps inspire me.
Check out Roll Call Forum and put some info about your Fire House in... Like to hear what your station is like, what you have as well as for number for firefighters as well as number of calls. Pass it around to your Firefighter Friends too....
I always put Apollo on a vest when near the water. I had him on a boat once without a vest, he saw a fish and instinctively went swimming. Well, tried to swim. On instinct I went in after him. Later found that the water was a balmy 62 degrees. Ever since I have had him a a PDF anytime we are near water. He may have a nice thick coat on, but I am a skinny bald guy, who does not tolerate cold water well!!

Hi Margaret! Your Shepherd is gorgeous. I am trying to get a K9SAR program going for our county. I've always had dogs and love training them so this is something I've always wanted to do.
Our K9 units are getting ready for possible deployment. Our hearts and soon our teams will be out there in Southern Calif. I have my bags packed if the call comes.
