To all my Brothers and Sisters.
I am asking for prayer for my Father. He is not doing so good anymore and his health is getting very bad. He is having problems with his heart, lungs, neck, back, and now his liver. He has Upper Respiratory Disease, General Disk Disease in his lower back, crushed disk in his neck and the Doctor fused from disk 2 to disk 7 and put a medal plate and 7 screws in his neck, and now his Liver is messing up. Some people say that there is no way he should be alive, but he is still here and fighting to stay alive.
What is so hard about the hole thing is that, His not only my Father but my mentor, teacher, and a Brother Firefighter. So I am having a hard time dealing with everything. I am asking for prayer to help my Family and I to be able to deal with it all. And any advice is welcome and thankful.

Be safe and God bless Bulldozer

This mess with medications can be a problem with people and what their doctors are ready to give them. I had a doctor give me a prescription to help me with my sinus problem and ended up with high blood pressure.
My mother never feels right with her medications and always ready to call her doctor to complain that they are making her sick

THE STATE OF GEORGIA IS MAKING IT HARDER & HARDER TO BE A VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER THEY WANT US TO HAVE TO SAME AMOUNT OF TRAINING AS A PAID FIREFIGHTER I DONT THINK ITS RIGHT
  • Gordon Mandeville

THE VOLUNTEERS FOR THE STATE OF COLORADO NEED A MINIMUM OF 36 HOURS OF TRAINING PER YEAR SO THEY CAN COLLECT THEIR PENSION AFTER THEY DID THEIR TIME. SO ANY OTHER DEPT. TRAINING IS ADDED IN TO THE OVER ALL TRAINING THAT THEY DO.
  • Eddie Rogers

The requirements in Mississippi are going up too. Vol Cert 1 (minimum for fighting structure fires) is going to like 70 hrs. Up from 48 hrs. I am afraid that these are going to discourage new folks from getting involved because of the time that is involved in training.

I love being on a Volunteer fire department. It has given me an opportunity to serve in my community in a unique way. Firefighting is not for everyone. I just wish I would have known how much fun it was alot sooner in my life.
  • Sarah Kennedy

I love being a Volunteer Firefighter too, I have learned so much. I really wish I would have started along time ago. I reallly love helping others, and serving my community. I have mety alot of great friends!!
  • Gildon R Turner

Being a Volunteer is very fulfilling and most people will never know the joy of doing something good for not people. Most of the people in the US don't know that the Volunteer services is by far larger then paid Fire services. We do what paid Fire Fighters do for the pure joy of fighting fire. Some many communities don't have the money to pay for fire service and that's where we come in. The joy of being a volunteer and the happy joy of fighting fire.

My hometown -- Brookville, PA, population 4,500 -- is planning a 3-day celebration to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its volunteer fire department. It will be held September 17-18-19 of 2009. We're trying to get as many congratulatory cards and letters for the department as we can. If anyone would like to send one, here's the address: Brookville Volunteer Fire Company, 240 Madison Avenue, Brookville, PA 15825, ATTN: Century Committee.
  • Rodolfo Guija

I am a Volunteer in the Peru Fire Department (Cuerpo General de Bomberos Voluntarios del PerĂº), with 46 years of service as volunteer firefighter, and now, I am the General in charge of the Image and Public Relations Office with national responsibility.
The National Fire Service in my country is entirely voluntary, and we are around of 10,000 members, between men and women in 188 fire stations in the main cities of the country.
    Our web page: www.bomberosperu.gob.pe
I think that many people do not know what is to serve to other people without any retribution. We know it and enjoy it !.
God Bless the Volunteers and be safe
  • Brian Keith Chenault

    hi volunteers brian
  • Terry Smith

Yes, I was proud to be a volunteer firefighter for 20+ years. I really enjoyed doing it, and serving with all the other members. I miss getting paged out at any and all hours of the day. The rush to get to the station and hopefully make the first truck. Re-inacting a train/truck accident call for the TV Series, Rescue 911. Now its on YouTube! I'm back involved with the City now, as a CERT team member. Just can't stay away!
  • Terry Smith

Something how over 70% of America's firefighter's are volunteers! With the same equipment, same training. And the same desire to serve, save and survive; to do it over and over. Whatever it takes to get it done!
  • Gregory R Bailey

Hi, We currently use Motorola Minitor IV pagers. Our local Motorla dealer only wants to send them out to the depot for repair. In Motorla usaul fashion now do not support them. A local radio repair shop started repairing them. We have trouble with that too. I know Minitor V is out there, but is anyone using something else. And has anyone used those flat rate mail off repairs. Service is of major concearn. We are in an area of limited local service. And as always funds are of a major concearn also. Thanks

  • james robinson

I am from a small town in oklahoma right off of a turnpike we usually average 200 plus calls a year and theres a select few that actually show up to most of the calls
  • Lisa

    Hello All!
  • Andrew Gardner

Hi everyone I have been a volunteer for 7 years now started as a junior I am very happy to be serving the department we are located in northern alberta canada when we try to hold a meeting or a practice we are lucky if we can get 6 members to show up but yet when there is a fire we usually get everyone same as when we have the annual supper there is people showing up usually everyone who is on the department can anybody give me some ides on how to get more members to come to meetings or practices
  • Steve McFarland

Everyone showing up for calls and dinners...you will see that theme repeated over and over on this forum. It is very common. What to do about it... There is no simple answer, and alienating members who don't show up for training, but do for calls can be hazardous to the health of the department. If they don't show up for calls, you may not even have a first-out crew, let alone the extra crews needed to handle something bigger than a shed fire. They need to show up for training, but you may have to entice them. Some people forget that the VFD isn't paying these peoples bills. It also isn't taking care of their families. In the department that I am attached to (but not active), family and job comes first. Few have the privilege of not having to work for a living, and everyone has a family. It is a VERY family oriented group. Parting words...get used to it, do your own best, and STAY SAFE!

Good to hear about your father. Just a side bar. I've been laid up for three weeks now. Had emergency lower back surgury. Doing much better now. Only thing I can do is listen to calls on the scanner. Really sucks but oh well. Bulldozer I don't know of any local jobs here that are hiring. You can look online at FireHouse.com might find something there. Stay safe
