Critically Injured D.C. Firefighter Continues to Recover; Investigators Begin Blaze Probe

WASHINGTON — A team of investigators plans to study how five District of Columbia firefighters seriously injured in a blaze became trapped in a building.

DC fire spokesman Pete Piringer said Saturday that one of the firefighters remained in critical but stable condition and three others were in serious condition after the early-morning fire Friday at a home in Northeast Washington. Another firefighter has been treated and released.

The building's roof caved in and several firefighters became injured by debris.

Piringer said Saturday that the chief has asked the fire marshal to convene a team of investigators to study all aspects of the fire, including the firefighters' gear, the building construction and how and why the firefighters were injured.

He says such investigations are typical after serious fires.
