In El Dorado we are required to be EMT-B. I am an EMT-I and T.O. II. I am also an American Heart Assoc. CPR/First Aid Instuctor.
Hi Troy I thought your name was familuar you were at the ksffa conferance in Hutch last year I have golfed with max brown some in the ksffa tourney thanks for your reply
Yeah, I remember meeting you. Will you be at this year's conference?
OH yes foresure will be my tenth in a roll
Our department doesn't require it, but I am an EMT-I because I am also on the EMS service. I actually don't really support the idea of mandatory cross training!
I think that cross training is essential due to the fact that we all come in contact with patients and handle some level of patient care. I used to be on Clark County EMS chele, it is even more vital out in rural western Kansas that everyone can help. In bigger cities there may be plenty of help for both sides of the equation, but in Ashland you can't always count on a large turnout. Tell Millie that Troy Jellison the "EMT-Exrodinaire" said hi!! Oh what the heck.....tell Dave Reiger I said hi too!! LOL
thanks for the input its interesting to hear your point of veiws from others here in our great state of kansas
No kidding?! I bet half your family goes to my Church too! I'll tell Millie and Dave I "ran into" you! Dave is Chief, has been for about 7 or 8 years now.

I agree it's vital that everyone can help. Cross training is always a good idea. What we are running into is a lack of bodies. So many of us are cross trained that we don't always have enough people to cover EMS and still have enough to send out on a fire.
The reason I don't support MANDATORY cross training is that it eliminates people from volunteering! Take my husband for instance, he is not going to pass a written test. He can not get the info from his head to the paper. I know he knows his stuff, he has been a fireman for 30 years (George Krier, ever hear of the tiny little guy?), if we required cross training he would no longer be able to be a fireman. We have EMS techs that have no interest in fire fighting and we have firemen with no interest in EMS. I'd hate to lose any of them just because they don't want to be both.
hey way out here in johnson ks almost colorado and oklahoma i run both fire and ems i take more call than anyone else if i didn't no one would be able to cover days and i have been doing it since 98 i beleieve that if possible it would be nice having the extra trained hands on a call even if there first responders some older firefighters don't ever want to train they know it all been there done that give me a young entergetic crosstrained male or female that wants his town to have the best ems and fire they can
I get to take quite a few runs myself - being both FF1 and EMT-I, makes it kind of hard on my "day job". I missed an EMS run yesterday because of work *sigh* Lucky you that you can run on days! We have a married couple that takes most of the day runs, I don't know what we would do without them. I bet your department(s) are real glad to have you!
iam a county employee so nothing has ever been said about me going on day time is a hard time to cover night we uselly have enough i take about 25 to 35 12 hr shifts a month do you or your husband ever attend kemta or ksffa conferance.
George is not an EMT so he has not been to KEMTA, but I have! I don't know if he has been to a KSFFA conferance or not? I know I haven't. It's kind of hard for me to get away from work much, so I keep it to re-cert hours such as KEMTA or the EMT refresher course I went to in Garden City last year. Now that I am secretary of the fire department I will try to make it to more meetings.
