I was wondering what does everyone do when they get a called when they our at work and our close to there district.

I usually respond from work for 2nd alarm or 2nd dispatch from work when I can. Then what ever time I miss because of call I have to make it up with in two weeks.

I work for the town highway and there is no problem responding to calls.
I'm on a small dept and work about 40 miles away.... If the tones go out and I can make it and be of use, I'm on my way. If I'm already at work and the tones go off It has to be something major otherwise by the time I leave work and haul butt to the scene it will be over. Either way my employer see it as a service to the community, even if it is another community. They have had no problems w/ us volunteers going to calls, we've been very fortunate. I've come to work late (They understand) I've missed days for training (State fire school) They understand. When I worked 2nd shift They would let me go to meetings/training. (As long as I brought proof of the training, accident, or fire they understand and have no real issues.
But on th same token they also know that if an accident happens while I'm at work (Work in a manfacturing plant) that training usually pays off for them, I also help w/ training in the plant. The work w/ me and I help them out so it benifits everyone. Thats how it works for me anyway.
I am pretty lucky. If I get a call at work I can just tell my boss, and he usually says "see you tomorrow". But If I dont have vacation time, I have to take time off without pay. So I try to call my chief once he gets on scene to see if they need help.
I work at a Oil Refinery about 4 blocks from the City Fire Hall, so if a call comes in, I get clearance from my co-workers, and can usually get "1st truck" ... I'm also part of the Refinery Fire and Rescue Team. Wish I would have joined up right after school (in '81) and became a fulltimer ... What a life/ career/lifestyle...
stay safe ALL!!!
I live in a small township and work as a plumber / a/c tech. that usually covers all of my district or mut. aide areas. I'm lucky though...my boss is former ff. If its a structure or major mva. I leave as soon as tones go off.the only peanilty is that I still have to finish up the job...lol...
I have been released from work during a couple of major events. (Flood, Large ice storm) During the ice storm I stayed at a Red Cross shelter for medical coverage.
I'm fortunate enough to have a job and a boss that will let me leave work for calls. Im a carpenter and we usually do jobs that are fairly close to our district. My boss usually doesnt take any time away from me unless im gone for a call a really long time. He's even cool enough to let me run a blue light on my work truck
Hello My name is Mike Orbell from the Inuvik North West Territories Canada Fire Dpt, and yes we all have paying jobs. when we recieve a call the majority of us respond from our jobs, and most employers are understanding of our position as for me my pay isn't docked.
My family owns where i work. So if i feel the need to leave for a call, i punch out and leave. I dont have to worry about making the time up. I normally only leave work if it is something good, but if it has been a few days since we have had a call.... i'll leave. I only live/work 7 mins from the firehouse. To keeps the books straight, i get a signed letter from the chief saying i was at the call.
I work for the City of Bicknell, and I also am on the Bicknell Fire Department. I leave work for every call. As a matter of fact, 4 of the 6 of us are on the department. So when the tones drop, don't worry about calling the water department, you aren't going to get anyone!!!
It sure helps pay the bills though, and put gas in the car.
I am a very lucky person in the fact that I live in a town of under 1000 ppl. I also work for the city maint. dept. I am free to go to any call as long as I/we are not ass deep in the middle of a water main break. Unless it is a stucture fire in town with ppl in it. Then my boss says get your butt there ASAP!
