For those who still don't buckle up, does seeing pictures of wrecks like the rollover of the Plattekill, NY rig have any impact on you?

It is advisable for fire fighters turning out for a call to use the seat belt because in an event of an accident crew will remain in seating position.

I buckle up and incidents like this still have an impact on me. I am deeply saddened any time I hear about a crash such as the NY rollover. Many times the victims are not so lucky. Showing pictures like this one and detailing stories about rollovers should be a wake up call for those who do not buckle up, but that's not always the case.

A nearby department was responding to an MVC yesterday after being told there were three people trapped and the car was on fire. As I listened I imagined how much anxiety there was among the responders. While they were en route I prayed they would make safe driving their number one priority so they could arrive on scene safely. They did.

Last year me and another firefighter were on our way to a mutual aide house fire. I was driving our light rescue which is also air supply. I repeatedly yelled at the other guy to fasten his seatbelt about a minute after he put his seat belt on a deer ran out in front of us hitting the side of the truck and sending it into a ditch, we stayed up right and nobody was hurt. With some damage to the truck. I of course received all sorts of "awards" at our annual Christmas party for the entire deal, but it was all in good humor. Maybe it's the generation I'm from, but I noticed the guys older than me are a lot worse about wearing seat belts than the guys my age or younger than me.

Our guys are really bad about bucking up, I was just as guilty as everyone else until a couple years ago. I decided to take it upon myself to make sure that I buckle up and everyone else does as well. I've gotten a few guys to follow suit, but we still have a lot that don't. If I happen to be driving or riding the officer seat the rig will not move until everyone is belted in, there have been a couple times where I've set the brakes after the driver released them and had to remind people to buckle up.

I think that the seatbelt issue is a big deal and until we get everyone to realize it and enforce it we will keep needlessly losing Firefighters in accidents. My goal is to get everyone in my department to use their seatbelts everytime they get in a rig and until that happens I'm going to keep up with what I'm doing.

Driving is the most dangerous thing we do.

It takes a lot of courage to stand your ground against guys/gals who refuse to operate safely.

Good luck and may you achieve 100%!!!
