What is the most important thing you have at a fire scene? And why?

I would say training stands out as the most important thing to bring to a scene.

Gotta go with the first answer. Using your brain, you can figure out where to get water, which tools to grab, where you left your boots and how to use all that training you've done.

In 12 years I have never forgot my boots. But I suppose anything is possible. We see pictures of FFs that forget all their turn out gear all the time. So I guess some may forget there boots.

I've never forgotten to put on boots/bunker pants, but I have forgotten to put on my Nomex hood a couple of times.

Just to clarify my post a little, which i probably should have done in the first place... i was referring to care and maintenance of your PPE, not forgetting it entirely... we've made it sort of an unwritten rule that the OIC of any tanker asks everyone to do a 2 second gear check before the tanker rolls... pants, jacket, helmet, gloves, flash hood, smoke goggles...

I will tell you I forget my wallet, my cash and anything else I don't want to loose. I leave it all in my van or in the truck. The reason is; if the fire scene turns out to be a hazmat incident for some unforeseen reason you have just lost all this stuff. We all know or should know if we have to go into decon everything on us is considered contaminated. So I leave it all behind.
