Hi guys,

I'm trying to join a fire department just outside of Albany NY for when I'm up here for college, however I received all of my certificates and training down in NJ where I live. Does anyone know if my NJ firefighter training will carry over into NY so I don't have to retake all of those classes again?

Thanks,

Tucker

Tucker, you would need to seek reciprocity in NY.  If you approach the state fire office, or fire administrator, they would issue you an exam to check to see if you pass equivilancy here in the state (which I am sure you would, you have seen the discussions in regard to training requirements across the country I am sure, and you would see NY is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to volunteer firefighter requirements).

If you are doing what I think you are, which is a mutual aid agreement between your home department and the one near your college, the agreement would possibly cover that as well.  Your home chief would state that you are trained to whatever level firefighter you are, and attest to it (meaning he/she would be sticking their necks out for you to voucher that you are who you say you are) in a signed agreement between them and the hosting department and allow you to act as a "Mutual Aid Firefighter" while at school.

Hope any of this helps you, good luck in school and stay safe.

Moose

Thank you very much, I will certainly look into it.

We have 2 guys on our department that came from New Jersey. All of their certs. transferred over. You should not have a problem.

What college are you attending? What department are you looking to operate with?

I was with a department in Guilderland. We had a couple of kids from SUNY-Albany operating with us.
