What are some of your "inventions" that you've used to "make life easy".

We've all seen the basic "cherry bombs" and nails to hold doors open, but what about your dikes, or multi tool? Any modifications appreciated because we all can learn from these ideas...

We have a firefighter on our dept. that's a machinist/welder and what he did was made a 3' long tool out of aluminim with a D handle on one end and on the other it's sort of a triangle shaped.  We use it to shove it up through a ceiling or wall with lathe/plaster on it then you turn the end so it's sideways and pull a section down.  Works good on just drywall too.

We call it the john or J tool named after the firefighter who made it.

i got this from the late Ray Downey of FDNY rescue 2 during a ride a long years ago

take a halligan and cut it in half and insert a bar making it longer for about 4ft total. its still a halligan but it has a lot of leverage and doubles as a short pike pole

On You Tube i saw a department use a very short ladder (like about 3 or 4 or 5 ft) for entry to single story elivated homes for venting

Not a bad idea with the radio and the airpack. SCBA's are becoming more and more advanced it really wouldn't surprise me if that's the next thing to show up!

we carry a 36" halligan on our engine, it works great for venting the hood on vehicle fires, lets you stay back a bit from the car and still get the job done

While integrating a radio into the SCBA may be a neat idea, with the number of different radios on the market and the crazy cost of SCBA already, I think this is an idea that would price itself right out of existence.  Perhaps just a simple interface, that actually worked, that hooked into the facepiece speaking diaphram would be a suitable compromise.

I took a shovel and put a probie on the end of it.

Then I took a broom and put another probie on it

it worked great cleaning up after a TA

Finding and using the right tool after getting expert advise from a friend does not always work out. Beware... and of course, keep smiling!
