Where do YOU think the remains of our fallen 9/11 brothers should be placed at the WTC site?

Plans have been in place since 2003 to entomb remains of our fallen brothers at the base of the new WTC complex, some seven stories under ground.

Now, some families of those who were lost on that fateful day are speaking out about their desire to not have these remains placed so far under ground, stating that their hope is for a tomb above ground to remind the world of their unparalleled sacrifice much like the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

My question is for the remainder of the fraternal brotherhood:

What do the brothers and sisters of the fire service think?

Should this be above or below ground?

(I only ask that all responses remain appropriate considering the sacred subject matter of this forum.)

I don't know if your talking about identified remains or unidentified. If they are identified then I believe it should be up to their families. Hopefully this would have been thought about a little sooner than 10 years after. I see that there will be a memorial site for them near a reflection pool, looks pretty cool. I don't think it matters about their "remains". As long as there is no mosque built near that area, for the respect of the fallen. Never forget!
I think these are identified. Most were through DNA.

I personally agree with the family members to a degree. The intention is that these responders be memorialized, and that IS admirable.

However, I think that people are going to occupy those offices regardless of where these remains are placed. If that is a concern and motivation for placing this tomb out of site I think that is deplorable.

Personally, I think it should be done above ground for all to see and be reminded. Civilians seem to forget to easily. We should NEVER allow that.

I think the placement of an aboved ground tomb would be appropriate to honor their sacrifices. Because of the nature of their being entombed by the collapse is too sensitive to bury these remains so deeply beneath the new complex.

I think some people are playing the out of sight, out of mind game with these brave remains. This is totally unaccpetbale to me.
you're an ass. You defile thier memory with your petty hatred for your fellow Americans. You have shamed us all.
That's the point. I pose the question already knowing that most of our answers would say to leave it up to the families. Our battle is against those who wish to relegate these memories out of convenience to make it easier to pretend that we are not in danger and that this is an isolated incident in the annals of history.

I created this forum under the expectation that we would/should support the feelings of the families. I completely agree. I also completely agree that we should not allow them to place our brothers out of sight to be forgotten.
Vic...agreed.

Tyler...you must resist your urge to hate Muslims buddy. That sentiment is unAmercian and antagonistic. You probably should read more about this. Did you know one of the 9/11 hijackers (not making excuses for their actions) was harassed unrelentingly by fellow college students in NC? I bet you didn't.

If you watched the news, you would know that the new plan is now for a non-denominational Unitarian religious center at that site.

We need to not mistreat Muslims pal. Would you judge an Islamic American soldier fighting for our country? How about a firefighter, policeman, EMS provider, teacher, or other person who sacrifices their lives for others?

THINK ABOUT THAT! There ARE Islamic members of the FDNY who might read what you wrote here!
They didn't say if they were identified or not. I would guess that they were because of the DNA processing that was done.

That means beyond the shadow of a doubt that they should honor the families' wishes. Don't you think?
