I went to a town board meeting in my small town two months ago. I ask them to start have the countys recycle trailer that we already pay taxes on come to are town. They lied, made excuses said anything they could about why it is a bad idea. I told them then someone was going to burn a house down with illegal burning they more less said it was a god given right to burn what ever someone wanted to burn.
Paged at 12:02 yesterday for a garage fire I was already on station arrived 5 minutes later to find a garage with a car in it fully involved, A van in the drive fully involved, one house well involved and heat damage to the house next door. A Iraq war vet had been driving by and stopped and went in and got the 90 year old homeowner and the home health aid out before the back of the house flashed over less than a minute later. Sorry to say the homeowners little house dog did not survive.
Upon investigation it was found the home health aid had set a fire in a burn barrel in the back yard and left it unattended. It had caught the dry grass and leaves on fire and you know where it went.
After two hours we had it all the way out and kept it where we found it, But alot was lost in the few minutes before arrival. It had been burning along time before being called in.
All I can say to the town board is '' I told you so!!" feel proud and stand on your beliefs you will kill someone yet!

You were absolutely right to warn the council, but don't feel bad. We had the same thing happen here last week. The residents just won't learn from others' mistakes and the trend will continue forever. We've had a burn ban now for almost a month and we run illegal burns nearly every day.

Here in Indiana it is always illegal to burn anything but clean wood products. This is wood with no paint or varnish. and leaves, grass are a clean wood product. There are other laws to deal with how they are to be contained as they are burned and smoke.
We have tried to enforce these laws but the hell we catch from the people and the town board has backed them everytime.

Every illegal burn we go on...the barrell or area is filled with foam. Try restarting that Jackhole.
Unfortunately our area allows people to burn, as long as they have a burn permit and it's done after 1700. I live in a very rural area and the FD's are all volunteer. That's why they say after 1700 they can have a controlled burn.
To me a controlled burn means the big red trucks are there before and during the burn....not being called after it gets out of containment.
I feel for you John....sometimes it takes a sledgehammer to get a politicians attention. This is something your local media should have a field day with. "After Local politicians ignore FD warnings about burn hazards, housebound citizen loses home and beloved family pet" I bet that would get their attention.
Stick by your guns John...Fore warned is Fore Armed !!

I plan on going to next month's town meeting. Just so in there minutes they can read John Dobson Told us so for the record. They told me there were no lots to set up the recycle trailer on. Well I know were there is a lot now.
I must be some kind of fortune teller or genius to be able to fore tell this was going to happen. At anyone time there is a fire in about 5 or 6 places in town day or night. Kind of hard to figure out thats not good and just asking for it.
This was not the first fire to damage a home or building. But up until now we got got the page fast enough to stop it from being a big loss.
