I have been thinking about this alot. I know sometimes it can not be avoided because of large scale incidents but I wanted to get everyones opinion and thoughts on conducting rehab on the fire ground.
In alot of departments hot days, cold days, rainy days and sunny days they go to a fire and spend excess amounts of time because they keep rotating crews in and out of the fire. And then in some departments they get in get the job done and they go home and conduct rehab after the fire is out, spending less time on scene.
My thoughts are lets get in, get the job done and go home.
I know some will say those are deparments have alot of man power but the departments that spend more time on scene also have man power. Just think on a hot day for example sometimes chiefs or other officers are calling for 2nd and 3rd alarm assignments and sometimes greater for more man power to the scene because of the weather not the size of the fire. This sometimes is bringing in 3-4 other towns of apparatus and man power . So its just like those big departments (except the man power is not there right away and the out of town companies most of the time usually stage outside or start the rehab rotation as soon as they get their releaving the crews on scene).
So why is it that the bigger of the departments can have all crews (with RIT in place) get into a fire get the job down, and overhaul complete before they even think about rehab when the smaller departments spend extra time on scene in the elements and IDLH enviroments switching out crew after crew after crew before the job gets done?
The bigger departments have it right the quicker the job gets done and we get to come home the safer it is for everyone. Rehab after a fire. If you come out to switch your bottle drink some water and go right back to work. Plus the quicker you get it done the less bottles you go through so you do not have to worry about the two bottle rule and the quicker you go back to your station out of the elemets and out of the IDLH enviroments.
Now I know some of you may think I am nieve and wrong, but this is my opinion. Its not to upset anyone or to start a p***** contest big department vs small department. So please do not turn it into one.
Just state your opinion.
Thank you
