My department has a strong Fire Pup program, wich I have been put in charge of. It's a good program but I wanted to do something a little more interactive. So, I tried being a clown for a recent Pub Ed event and it was a hit. So now I would like to get more info on it. If your department has clowns for pub ed I would like to know how they got started. Anything would be a help. Thanks and stay safe!

Hi Scott. We had 2 clowns for Phoenix FD unit they retired. I am doing Pub Ed through the Hall of Flame as a clown "Firebug". I also teach preschools the Learn Not to Burn program. I have a ball doing it.

If I can find my clown picture I will post it.
Thanks for the in put. I am hoping to use the clown for large events. I want to have clowns in the classroom but only as an ice breaker. I do not think that having a clown teach is a "great" idea. I feel that for younger kids or those scared of fire fighters the clown will help break the ice then let my guys talk to them, do the PPE build up and let them see a "real" firefighter up close. I am trying to do my clown thing for fairs, and large scale Pub Ed events. Maybe do a parade or two.

I have done a lot of work on this. It is at the begining. I have only been a clown at one event. It was a Emergency service day at a local McDonalds. I made balloon animals and talked to kids and parents about having a safe place, checking smoke detectors, use of space heaters and other things while they waited to get a balloon. At last years event people came to see the trucks and left. We had a lot more face to face time with everybody. So my department looked at it as a great tool.
