D.C. fire department spokesman Pete Piringer says firefighters were called to the building on 16th Street between Lamont and Irving streets at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Piringer says a 38-year-old man who jumped from the building has died. He says two people are listed in serious condition and another three are listed in critical condition, including a child.

Piringer says 125 people have been displaced and were given shelter at a nearby recreation center.

He says the fire appears to have begun in a common area on the 5th floor of the eight-story building.

The fire had closed a portion of 16th Street. The southbound lanes reopened at 7:30 a.m

Great job to my brothers that made a TON of saves. Can't save them all of course and this fire was off pretty good prior to arrival. They used some quick, aggressive tactics and there are many still alive because of that. Great job DCFD.
Were any of the brothers running on the fireground? It's dangerous and looks unprofessional.
Haha! Gee golly I hope not. If they walked and some people died then at least they would have gotten a good size up and they wouldn't trip over hose lines.
Great Job DCFD!

One little suggestion. Perhaps all of us City Fireman should consider power walking instead of running. We could have little pink weights placed on our bunker gear at the wrist and ankles. We'd look very stylish going in circles around the fire building. Plus it would give us tight buns. HAhaha! I kill me,hahaha!
