Hello All, I'm Firefighter Hicks and I would like to ask everyone what being a Fire/EMS Professional means to you. I will tell you what it means to me: It means getting up at all hours of the night to go save some poor soul from danger and to have them look at me with so much love in their eye knowing that if it wouldn't have been for me and the rest of my team they would not be here right now. It means responding to a car accident and working hard to ensure that everyone gets out safe and goes home to family and loved ones. It means teaching the younger ones about Fire Safety and Prevention so that they have a better understanding of what to do to prevent a fire from happening and what to do when and if a fire would happen. I love doing what I do and knowing that because of me and every other Fire/EMS personal out there the people of our communities can live safe and rest assured that we will doing everything in our power to keep them safe. I would like everyone this site to respond to this post because I want to know what doing what we do everyday means to you.

                                                Thank You
Firefighter Hicks.

Absolutely. Everything we do reflects not on us as individuals, but on the department, the community and the fire service. Even the way a volunteer firefighter dresses when he shows up for a call can make an impression. (We have a member who insists on wearing tattered t-shirts and shorts and sometimes flip-flops! --- Maybe we'll start a new dress code.) The way we drive when we display a department sticker on our vehicle makes an indelible impression. And so on...
Thanks, Scotty!
The Best thing in the world that gives you a rush. Hearing that pager go off, you have to rush off to the station and Get on your Turnout gear. And then find a Seat on a rig.
I get a rush when it's evident someone has truly been helped. I get bummed when we aren't able to make a difference. The runs are about one third the first outcome, about one third the second and about one third --- no effect at all. Oh, well. We do the best we can to help and the rush comes along with it.
Norm,
Very well said and I agree with 100%.
I did. Imagine that.
KGod, that's because you just don't have the need for constant positive reinforcement. You instead are shamelessly competent.
I'm pretty positive I can reinforce that statement. (Don't hug me.)
MY NAME IS FIREFIGHTER TIM URDIALES, I HAVE BEEN ON THE JOB FOR 15 YRS AS OF THIS OCT. I LIKE THE QUESTION YOU ASKED CAUSE I LIKE TO ASK THIS QUESTION TO ALL THE FIREFIGHTERS THAT I COME ACROSS. TO ME BEING A FIREMAN IS MORE THAN JUST A UNIFORM OR TITLE IT IS A WAY OF LIFE FOR ME. I LIKE TO THINK OF MYSELF AS A TRADITIONAL OLD SCHOOL FIREFIGHTER. I LIVE BY OUR CORE VALUES TRADITON , HONOR,LOYALTY, BROTHERHOOD, AND INTEGRITY. I LIVE FOR THE 2 AM STRUCTURE FIRE , THE ROLLOVER WITH ENTRAPMENTS, THE HEAVY RESCUE CALL NOT CAUSE I WANT TO SEE PEOPLE HURT BUT BECAUSE IT ALLOWS ME TO SEE HOW FAR I CAN PUSH MYSELF THROUGH MY FEARS , INJURIES, AND MY EMOTIONS. I LIVE FOR THAT ADRENALINE RUSH YOU GET WHEN YOU ENTER A STRUCTURE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT NOT KNOWING IF YOU WILL COME OUT ALIVE OR IF YOU WILL HAVE THE TASK OF RESCUING SOMEONES MISSING FAMILY MEMBER. OR THE FEELING YOU GET WHEN YOU DELIVER A YOUNG MOTHERS NEW BABY OR REVIVE SOME CHILDS FATHER OR MOTHER. I COULD KEEP GOING ABOUT THE DIFFERENT THINGS I LOVE ABOUT THIS JOB BUT THE TRUTH IS EVERY DAY I FIND NEW THINGS ABOUT FIREFIGHTING THAT I LOVE BUT MOST OF ALL I LOVE KNOWING THAT ALOT OF THE THINGS WE DO MOST PEOPLE WILL NEVER KNOW BUT I TAKE GREAT PRIDE KNOWING THAT MY BROTHER NEXT TO ME DOES AND TRUTH BE TOLD THATS ALL THAT I TRULY CARE ABOUT. ITS NOT ABOUT THE MEDALS OR THE NEWS FOOTAGE ITS JUST KNOWING THAT I HAVE MADE A DIFFRENCE IN STRANGERS LIVES. HHHHHOOOORRRRAAAAHHHHH FIREDAWGS !!!!

Are you sure it was this thread and not the water? ; ^ )
Just to be clear, I don't want no damnhug from no damnthing. (You probably got him all excited merely suggesting it).

All that other stuff? I get it all the time. Really, I do. All the time. Every day. Yep, sure do.
WP,
Get over yourself...I have no intention on giving you huggies so stop sending me private messages asking (not that there's anything wrong with it...hugging, I mean).
Jackie,

You weren't supposed to say anything.
