Can a Boss Fire a Volunteer Firefighter?
i was at work and the pager went off and my boss told me if i leave he would fire me. can he legally do this. is there a law that help the vol firefighters.

if your bosses business or house catches on fire (if he lives in a vollie dist.) i hope the bossess of the "other" volunteers get to go and fight the fire while you are CHAINED to your desk as your boss looks to you for help. while you're waiting for the first due you can tell him the following...the volunteer fire department depends on citizens that willingly sacrafices their time and puts their lives on the line to help the citizens and BUSINESSMEN your community. the support of local business who employ known volunteer firefighters is a testament to the dedication he has an employer to sacrafice a little of the bottom line to support one of the most cost effective emergency servcies he can recieve. i'm sure an arrangement could be made for you to make up the time but if says no than thats that...and that sucks

all most positive there is no law protecting vol firefighters in PA work and vol firefighting are two diffrent things... yeah its for the good of the ppl but your got your job to work not to leave when the pager goes off... sorry man hope things work out for you!

Would a career firefighter leave his station because he got called to his off-duty job?

Unfortunently I dont believe there is a federal law about that. In oklahoma its pretty much up to your boss as to whether or not you are alowwed to leave work for a call.

In NJ its a state law that they must let you leave and they can not fire you. How ever if you are salary based paid they may dock your paycheck. If you're hourly paid they may dock your pay for the day.

now im not fully sure but last i had heard from my father and guys on his dept its federal law that was put in to affect after 9/11 that an employer can not fire u for going to a fire but can suspend u from work with out pay as long as they feel proper for u leaving

in michigan there is a law prohibiting employers from firing volunteer firefighters and or emts who are late or absent while on an emergency call, MI senate bill 0921, contact me if you want any more info

No laws in any state that I know of. Your employer hires you to work for them, not the fire department. They expect you to do your job especially in the private sector. In the public sector a lot of towns will allow their employees to leave the job for a "working fire" or a first aid call. The problem will arise though that the employee sometimes take liberties by not returning to work after the call and stay at the fire station "critiquing the call" if you will at the "beverage room". A few bad apples can spoil a good thing.

Hi Gary, I don't know what state you are in but most states have a law in place to protect volunteer firefighters from being fired or reprimanded for being late and/or leaving for calls, NYS has either just passed or they are about to pass the law. However, be cautious because an empoyer can fire you for any reason and sometimes for no reason, so they don't have to say it is because you were at a fire call or left for a fire call. Some other thoughts are it depends on what your job is, common sense has to come into play to.
1.) If it is just a bandaid call or garbage can fire you should not be leaving work.
2.) Someone else mentioned not taking advantage, go to work or return to work ASAP, don't even help clean up the others will have to do it & if they get mad you left to bad.
3.) This probably should have been number one on my list it depends what type of work you do for instance I am a nurse at one of our hospitals and I can not just leave my patients and go. If the call comes in before I am at work they usually can have another nurse stay over and cover till I get there, there are some jobs that you just can not leave. Have a great day! Stay safe!
