"The Supreme Court gave its approval Wednesday to displaying a cross on public land to honor fallen soldiers, saying the Constitution "does not
require the eradication of all religious symbols in the public realm."

"Speaking for a divided court, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy said the 1st Amendment called for a middle-ground "policy of accommodation" toward
religious displays on public land, not a strict separation of church
and state."

Shareef and Jack, the Supremes have called this one wrong, evidenced by the six disparate opinions that have been written. This is an end-run around the rules prohibiting government endorsement of religion.

To your point above (that other faiths can also put up symbols) a Buddhist was denied erecting a Stupa along the same trail. We'll see if he comes back to the table on the heels of this ruling. We've now opened the door, so everyone is welcome to come on in!

Vic, my hopes exactly. Kind of like teaching intelligent design along with Pastafarianism, if you allow one you have to allow all. I wish I was closer to the Mojave, I'd be standing in line with my request for my religious display. It's going to be hard to disallow anything anywhere, I look forward to the Charlie Foxtrot that is going to ensure.

I don't see how this is an endorsement of religion, it looks more like the "free exercise thereof". At any rate, what "the rules" prohibit is the establishment of religion. A cross in the desert? Not an endorsement, and nowhere near an establishment.
