I am interested in getting an idea of the variety of shift scheduling patterns that other departments use and your experiences with them.

What are the various ways the Company based system is used?  For example, I am familiar with the 3 Company based calendar, with 24
hour shifts.  Like, today (March 18) is
Company B, tomorrow is Company C, then Company A etc....

My questions are, are there different company based systems that use different shift lengths, or start on different days?  I know there are 48 hour Company based days (so, each company has 2 days on, 4 days off)...  Is there a standard date set for those days?

Thanks

actually, it was intended for all types of departments, I figure more detailed examples will come from Career or Combination departments, just because they are more likely to have the call volume to justify patterned shifts.

Thanks.

I presume, that the 12 hour shift days vary for other members of the department?
I appreciate the input on all this. I am putting together an online application that will generate a calendar with the Company colors for the appropriate shifts for the day. I think they are usually A-red, B- Green, C Blue . Does "D" have a color? Are these colors standard?

I want the application to be tailored to fire departments where they are able to print out a calendar for the month indicating what Company is on each day.
We work a four day schedule with two ten hour days and then two fourteen hours nights and then you are off for four days and it moves ahead a day each week. For instance if you worked days Monday and Tuesday you would work nights Wednesday and Thursday and then off for four days and go back on days the next Tuesday and so on. It works out to 42 hours per week and you get paid overtime for the two hours each week or we have two vacation picks called Kelley Days that we use.
We are a combo dept. with 75 members. We have part time guys that some work 30 hr. a week and some work 20 hr. a week. Once the part time guys have their monthly schedule filled they go to the rotational fill in list to fill the rest of the open shifts. It works real well for us. we have 5 stations, 4 of them are open M-F from 7am - 5 pm
The guys are scheduled to work at usually only 1 station during the month and then are rotated to another station for the next month.
