Emergency Services Driving Simulator
so today the local city fire department invited the bagdad junior firefighters to come up and drive the simulator they had rented from kctcs and i was one of the juniors who went up there. I was just wondering if anyone had driven a similar simulator. I didnt do so well when i drove it but neither did the adults who were there driving it. I rolled a pumper and hit and ambulance so i failed lol but i did think it was a good experience and really tested driver skills. so for those of you who have driven a tanker or pumper (which is what we were allowed to "drive") and also done the simulator i was wondering if it really is a good test of driving skills.

I've used a DORAN simulator. It seemed pretty realistic, they didn't have a full mock-up of the cab, but all the basic gauges and controls, plus some extra fluff. It was difficult at first, but once you got the hang of it, and understood how the rig handled, it was lots of fun.

Sure sounds like fun. The only driving siulator I ever had the chance to play with was one I at Michael Jackson's (RIP) Neverland Ranch. Lots of fun!

this driving simulator to me looked like the exact copy of a cab. it had 5 digital screens that represented the windows then screens for the mirrors... all the gauges were completely functional and if you drove up on the curve or hit an ambulance like i did the seat would shake to simulate a wreck. of course if was real easy to reset the simulator, prolly woulndt be so easy on a real pumper

When I said not a complete mock-up, I meant it wasn't set inside something that looked like the front of the rig, like DC's one is. Its in a trailer, but the actual simulators themselves are realistic. One of two had a second seat for an officer, they both had functional intercom systems, full sirens, and one had working lights. For someone who's never driven before, I felt confident after a while.

Driving sim. cool idea. If its anything like a flight sim. i think it would be awesome. Anyone have any idea if there is a driving simulator program for PC's? Besides the racing / pursuit type games which don't do the job. It would be great if there was a program available for the average joe to afford. I did find a pump simulator which is neat. but again the driving thing would be great.

I'm not sure about the one Ms. Travis did, but the one I used was nothing like a flight simulator, at least not the ones you can use on your computer. You can't really replicate everything you need to. Another thing is, why would the average joe need an emergency vehicle driving simulator?

Jessica I used that same one twice, once at the Hazard fire college and once at our dept. for our driving class. It's pretty realstic as far as situations go and as far as the eletronics will allow. I did well on the simulator and made a 100 on the actual obstacle course. The upside is that it's way cheaper to roll a truck electronically than to roll an actual truck. The downside is that, while you get the feel of the road, it's not really accurate as to HOW the truck will atually feel going down the road. You don't get the rolling motion going around curves, and you don't get the movement of riding down the road. But as far as training tools it is a great tool if you keep in mind it is only a tool.

Hi Jonathan. I actually kind of knew that a fire apparatus simulator is not the same as a flight simulator. I know this for a fact, that fire trucks do not propellers or wings, or landing gear (except aerial devices)
No, I suspect there would not be a simulator as elaborate as the ones you people have used available for a pc. It would be like the real aircraft simulator that the pilots train on, and similar to what NASA would train on. I don't mean that kind. Those would never fit in my little basement. I guess I worded it wrong. Average Joe prolly wouldn't need a simulator. I consider myself just an "average Joe". I know I probably don't have near the experience you have driving or firefighting, and for that reason I would just kinda like something to try out. I am not all that busy these days, and it does get a bit boring. Just for the record, there are simulators out there, that really DO replicate the things that need to be. Of course it would be hard to replicate real rain, or real hose breaks where you get soaked, etc.. but for operational purposes most good quality simulators do have a degree of realism. The pump simulator I found is interesting. But thanks for bringing me up to speed.
