BROOKHAVEN, Miss. - A Loyd Star volunteer firefighter has been charged with using the department's Fuelman card to buy gasoline for his personal vehicle.

Lincoln County Fire Coordinator Clifford Galley tells the Brookhaven Daily Leader that 20-year-old Ben Smith was arrested Monday.

Galley says the use of the card appears to have gone on for several months and was reported when fire department officials found more gasoline purchases than usual.

Galley says Smith was charged with embezzlement of more than $500. Smith was being held pending an initial court appearance.

It wasn't immediately clear if Smith has an attorney.
