Sex abuse claims in fire brigades: report
AN investigation has revealed a hidden culture of bastardisation in the NSW Fire Brigades involving the sexual abuse and humiliation of new recruits in bizarre initiation rituals
The Sunday Telegraph investigation has uncovered claims the rituals were widespread in the service for decades amid claims that management turned a blind eye or covered up for the perpetrators.
Victims and witnesses have told how recruits were allegedly held down by other firemen, stripped, sexually penetrated, masturbated or branded with a red-hot coat-hanger.
Others had buckets of urine poured over them.

For those that have read my rants, you'd know that I've got zero tolerance towards initiations, pranks, etc in the firehouse. There is no place for this type of behavious in ANY workplace, especially one that revolves around trust and teamwork. The firehouse is a workplace. Here in Oz (don't know about other countries) it's an offence to partake in any of this behaviour or to condone it, turn a blind eye, etc.

Yeah I can see the fun in that and the benefits to the team must be awesome- NOT!
The culture MUST change...

thank god this is the exception and not the rule. no one tolerates this kind of activity, regardless if you are in OZ or anywhere else in the civilized world. what an embarrassment for the fire service... CBz

It certainly is Mike.
The big concern I have is that it can start off as "innocent" but can quickly escalate to out of control or harmful.
We also need to be mindful that we don't know members backgrounds prior to joining the fire service. Throwing a bucket of water over someone could easily remind them of torture from perhaps something like the Vietnam war- we don't need the psychological mess this sort of supposedly innocent act can bring on....

OMG !!!!! What a black eye for the fire service . We are fast to point out that we are a brotherhood, and as such we are supposed to have each others back , how in the h e double hockey sticks (HELL) DOES SOMETHING LIKE THIS TAKE PLACE WITH OUT SOMEONES INTERVENTION.
This kind of behaviour disgusts me as well,thank you Lutan for bringing it to every ones attention . This kind of cancer must be removed with as you say zero tolerance. What is next are we going to require the membership to drink the Kool aid if the reference is not too old for everyone.

HOW STUPID ! YES, LET US RAPE THOSE WE NEED TO TRUST OUR LIVES WITH... THEN LET THE RAPISTS BE THE MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY WHO GO OUT AND SAVE LIVES !
If they would rape their colleagues, HOW MANY PATIENTS DID THEY RAPE ????? How many fragile, people in danger, were exploited for entertainment by these same people ????? I have to throw-up now - this makes me SOOOOOOOOOOO sick !!!
It is true with the fire-service being a para-military organization there are similar issues - but that is still BS - ABUSE HAS NEVER BEEN ACCEPTABLE !!!
I am ashamed to call them family - because they are NOT people that I would allow in my family.
They EACH should spend the rest of their lives in jail for their crimes against humanity !!!
For all of those who did:
Commit a crime
Have knowledge of a crime
Cover up a crime
Furthermore, if any of those firefighters are or will get a pension, it should be immediately taken and given to the victims of those crimes.

I have never and will never tolerate behaviour like that.
"It is true with the fire-service being a para-military organization there are similar issues" - yes this type of bastardisation used to occur in our military. May sometimes rear it's ugly head again, but definitely not condoned. The whole thing is, as Lutan said, a crime here - for those who commit the action, those who may allow it and also those who know of it but do nothing.
IF it turns out to be true, then criminal action should take place. We will see.

I can't believe what I just read! The people involved in the act should be charged with sexual abuse no matter how longago this happened! they are the people that make the rest of us look like a bounch of ass holes! If someone tried to pull that shit on me I would break some faces!!!!

Wow, my chest tightened in seconds just reading the post, I did not and will not read the stories. I have dealt with some serious issues at work in the past and hope to never have to again, but never to this degree. That is disgusting. I can't believe management covered it up. In my department, things don't get to management, and are just swept under the rug before they can deal with the issues.
I can't believe these firefighters felt safe and were able to work with these assholes after being raped by them. It's no wonder crimes like this still happen if people who are supposed to be looked up to are perpetuating that its okay.
Sickens me.

I can't believe this...then again no I can't....the abuse taken every day in stations all over the world...first it began in the church and now its in a place where we work to save lives..I can't say what i want to on this because it would cause for the deletion of my account, this pisses me off beyond belief, I hope who ever is responsible for this gets the same thing done to them and they pay for what they did....
