We used to show up in advance of paramedics due to the distance they had to travel. Besides basic patient care we would move furniture, assure access outside the residence and send units to direct the ambulance to the scene since often they were new to the area. All in all we appreciated each other and got along

Lately however there seems to be animosity between us. Whether it is due to competition for funds or because of a recent trend to accomadate ambulances with ambulance bays built in to some of the newer stations. Do they feel threghtened or am I the only one to notice this trend.

In our area both the EMS and Fire are all staffed by volunteer personnel. Until about 4 months ago the medics ran on their own calls and us fire people ran on ours. Of course we have the calls were both of us are needed and we work well together when those call happen. About 4 months ago at one of our fire meetings we were discussing our staffing levels and the conversation eventually worked it's way around to the problems that the EMS is having with staffing levels. After a little discussion the fire department decided that from that point forward we would send at least two firefighters to support the EMS on all of their calls. From my perspective it's one of the best decisions we have made in quite a while. It has made the EMS personnel's job a little easier having a couple of firefighters around to help with the grunt work so they can do their job.

I would also like to point out that I have no desire to learn all that is needed to be on our EMS department so for me the task of helping the EMS on their runs has two benefits, it helps both services learn how to work well together no matter which one is in charge and secondly it may also help our EMS maintain staffing so I don't have to be cross-trained! :)
Yellow Canaries. LOL!!! That cracks me up.
Fire Monkeys, Yellow Canaries... what's next?

Our fire dept ALWAYS beats our EMS on the scene...we do EMS better than they do

" Paramedic Squaaaaaaad 2, Lieutenant, total of 7"

They fail to get out so often that the neighboring county ems runs most of their calls, it really is sad.

They have have a board in their station showing "Days since last scratch", many times this is zero

However sometimes they have 2 or 3 box's out at once... like during the snow storm

Their motto is "when seconds count" well a lot of time it is 10 min for ambo to get on scene, 5 minutes for them to get out, if not next EMS is alerted

We do not get along with them sad to say.
Not that we shouldnt and I know we are all here to save lives
We work well with our EMS
Heres a thought.... when you bring up that sometimes EMS has the revolving door, or seem to be all about the dollar, hello private ambulance services are in the business to make money. They exist to make some owner or CEO/COO enough money to live a lifestyle that the EMT in the bus can't. I have worked my share of low wage, little to no benefits, private EMS to understand the differences in fire based EMS and private EMS.

Now on the other hand if you look at the dynamics of fire based EMS, the firefighter EMT or paramedic is secured through the municipal budget, usually has great benefits, and decent wages, even with the economy the way it is, fairly secure. Very seldom in the big picture does a firefighter leave before retirement, less turnover, etc.
Funny stuff right there mister medic.... even if your a fire monkey!

Ralph,

It's never safe enough for you skirts to enter - might still be a wisp of smoke inside.

And did I hear you right? You call a retired leatherneck "squid"? Why isn't he stomping your guts out?
You mean your pt's are actually sick? It's a lot different in Philly. What a country!
