Environmental Extremist Pleads Guilty to Arson
LOS ANGELES - A man has pleaded guilty to conspiracy in the attempted firebombing of a Pasadena condominium development on behalf of the Earth Liberation Front.
Steven Murphy entered his plea to one count of conspiracy to commit arson in a federal courtroom on Monday. He faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced April 5.
The 44-year-old Murphy admitted that he conspired with another person involved in the environmental extremist movement to damage or destroy property. Prosecutors say he tried to burn down the condo project with a juice bottle containing gasoline but a timer attached to it failed.
Authorities say Murphy was connected to the attempted arson through DNA.
Murphy also admitted disabling the ignition of a tractor used on the job site and crediting the ELF.
