HOUSTON, Alaska - After a 14-day, 5,000-mile trip, a fire rescue truck has arrived at Houston.

The city bought the truck for $40,000 from a fire department near Charlottesville, Va.

KTUU reports Mayor Roger Purcell and his wife flew east and drove the 26-foot-long truck back to Alaska.

Purcell says the truck handled well with no problems. It replaces a 27-year-old fire truck in the town about 25 miles north of Anchorage.

Purcell and his wife volunteered because both have commercial driver's licenses and passports. None of Houston's firefighters had passports.

WHY do you need a passport to go from Alaska to Va,???
Perhaps for the return trip through Canada.
Driving between Alaska and the continental United States requires a U.S. passport to enter Canada.
sounds like maybe the mayor took a vacation to canada????
Unless Immigration Canada has changed their rules since July, you don't need a passport to enter Canada you need a passport to get back into the United States.
So when they when home through Canada they have to reenter US when they get to Alaska right
Canada is a great place to vacation! lol However, I doubt that he and she DID actually take a vacation.. although, being able to cruise through two countries with a fire truck, to me would be a nice break.
Unless the new truck had the latest feature (coming to all fire apparatus in the near future) called TURBO BOOST, which allows the truck to "jump" or fly across an object (in this case.. Canada.. at the flick of a switch.. it would be pretty hard for the chief and his wife to get that fire truck to Alaska without having to drive through part of Canada. Now, that being said, and the fact that we are in deed a friendly bunch up here ( or down here..depending where you are reading this from) just driving through our beautiful country doesnt really make it a vacation. Sounds like there are some pretty jealous people, who wanted the trip themselves and are upset about the "boss" getting the job done. Enjoy the new truck!
Thats just my take on it. lol
thats what I thought.......could be wrong, lol, wouldn't be the first time..

Yes. It's a case of you can't get there from here.
Well according to google maps that trip is about 4500 miles, not 5000. Wonder where the extra 500 came from?? hehehe :)

Seriously though, I hate doing 5 mile trips in our apparatus, they're all noisy, uncomfortable and certainly not designed for long distance cruising. A trip of that length and time would totally suck! Hats off to them I say.
