FDNY Denies Line of Duty Funeral to 9/11 Responder
NEW YORK - A wake is being held for a New York City firefighter who worked at Ground Zero for six months after 9/11 and was later diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Firefighter James Ryan, of Kings Park, N.Y., died on Christmas. He was 48 and leaves a wife and three children.
Uniformed Firefighters Association president Steven Cassidy is upset Ryan will not receive a line of duty funeral because the city does not consider his death job related.
Ryan's brother, Mike, believes his brother's cancer resulted from exposure to toxins at Ground Zero.
Firefighters who had worked with Ryan in Queens say they have organized an honor guard and bagpipes for Tuesday's funeral.
Services will be held at Abiding Presence Lutheran Church in Fort Salonga.

I THINK YOU MISS THE POINT COMPLETLY SO ILL MAKE IT A LITTLE CLEARER OUR GOVERNMENT WILL DENY IT TILL THE END PERIOD..........NO MATTER WHAT WE LOST A BROTHER WHO GAVE ALL OF HIMSELF OBVIOUSLY I WASNT CLAIMING TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS BROTHER OR THAT IM A DOCTOR I WASNT THERE AND I DIDNT KNOW HIM ..DOESNT CHANGE THAT THIER IS A FAMILY WHO LOST A FATHER BROTHER UNCLE AND A SON ALL IN ONE ......RIP BROTHER

I actually agree with the City on this; technically it is not a Line Of Duty Death. LODD’s are clearly defined. Maybe in the future if can be determined that certain cancers are only caused by firefighting. Right now we assume that he was “Infected“ from Ground Zero; & we will probably never know. James Ryan is a hero for the job that he performed, not receiving a LODD funeral does not change that fact.

I don't think it should matter whether it was a line of duty death or not. He was part of the fire department and anyone that dies while on the department should get a line of duty funeral.

first of all,my condolences go to ff Ryans family. my thoughts are a firefighter deserves a proper send off no matter how he passes. give him the respect he deserves,and send him off in style. I'm sure his brothers will do him right,and the union can go scratch. 6 months in hell doesnt deserve an honorable last ride? God speed,brother Ryan.

So when any of us {firefighter past or present} die 40 years after leaving the job; we should all get a parade with bagpipes 40 trucks & countless numbers of our brother/sisters following in a procession line. That’s crazy.
I think people on this site are confused. The man will still get a very respectful funeral with most of FDNY’s finest paying their respects & with the Honor Guard standing next to his casket. A line of Duty Death is just that you Died while you were working. This is a very gray area in this profession. Finally for all the people bringing in their political spin of a Great Government Cover-Up; please stop it. Your nonsense doesn’t give this firefighter the respect that he deserves.

If you did your homework doctors, you would know that he had 9/11 related cancer (According to FDNY) and after beating that was diagnosed with a second cancer. Are you going to tell me you know it was not directly related to his efforts on and after 9/11? Really?
This is a line of duty death.
If out of shape, way past their serviceable age firefighters are granted LODD status from heart attacks that happen after a call, can you in clear conscience say this is not a LODD???
If you die from injuries received at an emergency scene, or illness attributed to said scene how is that not a line of duty death?
Unless you can prove this man did not die of exposure from the rescue and recovery efforts he did in the LINE OF DUTY, then you are out of line.

CAN YOU PROVE that HE DID! You {who must be a doctor} can prove that this form of pancreatic cancer is/was only caused by particles that float in the air on one specific day & that no one else on the planet can get this cancer if they were not @ ground Zero after the attack. No; what is so important about a LODD funeral. Nothing; he is still getting the respect that he deserves. His family will still receive his death benefit. Why such an outrage. You left out a key word in you diagnosis of 9/11 related cancer. Every time it is brought up the word “suspected” is used. The FDNY said that the Cancer can be related to 9/11;
As to your heart attack question; the answer is YES providing the attack occurred within a specific time frame {which is clearly spelled out}. The key words are “after the call”; which means that they were working

Sarcastic attitude aside, if you're quoting the FDNY with regard to his previous (9/11 related) cancer that he beat, then why not quote from FDNY when they say that this cancer is not related to 9/11, Doctor?
Sadly, beyond your own say so, in order to qualify for a LODD the death has to be proven to be the result of actions or exposures while on the job. FDNY doesn't seem to think so. I'm not saying that pancreatic cancer can't be related to 9/11, only that it falls outside the range of the cancer types that has been accepted as being related.
Any by your reasoning, any responder who worked the pile and subsequently comes up with prostate cancer or breast cancer will also have be considered to have been a result 9/11.
This is a discussion on the topic and nothing personal to any posters and most certainly not to the family and friends of FF Ryan.
