I am looking into becoming Vol. in my area for the experience. Will that hurt or help my chances at getting on full time? Been through basic fire academy, and currently in EMT-B.

I left my thoughts on both your post on a comment on your page.
It's only going to help. Alot of full time paid firefighters start out as vols.
Working as a Volunteer will definitely help your chances of becoming a full-time firefighter. The experience and time invested is well worth your time. Every drill, every call and every experience whether Volunteer or paid is a good investment in your future. Education never stops.
The fact that you are not yet a firefighter anywhere and you're already looking for "lights" for you POV makes me question your motive(s).
But to the point no, if you have the stink of volunteer you probably won't get hired on a paid department.
If you believe that then I suspect you're going to have some very real problems.
I figured you were paid but just remember alot of paid started off as vollies.and in our area you wont find a paid crew for miles dont get me wrong thinking the way you do is why some VOLLIES dont care for paid. thank god all paid are not like YOU! Trey believe me it wont hurt you it will help you!!!!!!!
James, you need to improve your reading skills, specifically reading comprehension. If you re-read my last statement you (hopefully) will realize that I was being sarcastic; the writer posted wanting to know if being a vollie would hurt his chance of being hired. It's a pretty clueless question. Do you get it now?

Also, with regard to you statement(s) about my thinking, it has nothing to do with being paid or volunteer, it has everything to do with training, standards, NFPA, professionalism and yes, proper spelling and grammar. I think you might personally have a problem with paid guys. Me, I have a problem with people that think that they're firefighters just because they have a tee shirt.

"thank god all paid are not like YOU!" Please don't take start taking personal potshots at me, from what you've written there's a lot I can find to criticize about you.
trey this first part was to jack sorry about that but he thinks he is better than everybody else.Remember beinging a volunteer to me is a great fullfillment to my comunity and thats what counts . BE SAFE and STAY SAFE
First of all, I am picking up on attitude from you not my bro Jack. I am sure there are many departments that are "Vollie" in your area because the need dictated that. dont get me wrong thinking the way you do is why some VOLLIES dont care for paid. If a "Vollie" dosnt care for a paid it is because they choose to be that way. Do you think the paid guys walk around worrying about whether they are liked by the "Vollies"? Likewise, should the "Vollies" walk around worrying whether the Paid guys like them or not. I think not. We ALL have a job to do the best way we know how to do it. Jack is a respected, loyal an long time member here. You dont want to start pitching stones here ladd. You might just end up with a whole load of biosolids in your lapp before your through. I know Jack and what he had to say though blunt was right on. You really didnt read what he said. obviously!
James, you might want to quit while your ahead. Your ignorance is showing.
LOL - Sorry but I guess Jack dislikes himself as he chose to be a professional volunteer firefighter years ago....who BTW is safe-ish.

Trey around here it will only help you my friend, as we do not hire people off the street with absolutely no experience.
Thanks for your input guys it really helps. I've been told by a few people that paid depts dont like to hire vollie because they are then trained by another dept and might have their habits, whereas the paid wants you trained THEIR way. But I really appreciate the input. And I'm not getting lights for my truck, that was just curiousity because I was buying a new truck, and EVENTUALLY I'd like to get lights (when I'm a firefighter). Again, Thanks everyone.
chief you are right i will quit while i'm ahead remember everyone BE SAFE and BE SAFE
