I'm Cadet 2850 with BMTFD in Ohio. My Science teacher has been bugging me with Science FAir ideas and told me that i should use my cadet status as a benefit. Does anyone have any ideas as to new equipment theyd like to see or some time of effect they would like to know about involving fires, limited hazmat events or etc.?

just dont burn the school down
Do something on thermal imagers and their effect on the fire service. This should be fairly easy to do and would really have a lot of WOW factor to it. You could probably get a demo unit from one of the comapnies in your area to borrow for during the science fair. I would even go as far as contacting MSA and/or Bullard directly and letting them know what you are doing. They may be willing to send you all sorts of freebies as well.
when i was in 8th grade my science project was to test and 'take readings' of the flash points and buring temps of different combustable liquids...(kero,oil,lighter fluid). all of my temp readings came from the internet and a ff1 book but during the burn the thermal came out for show and 'oo ah' factor.i got an A.as far as a time and effect project you might be able to look at the btu output or fully involved times for newer materials (synthetics) versus older used materials (naturals) in either vehicle components or household furniture.the vehicles might be easier and cheaper by going to a local junkyard or body shop and pulling scrap pieces from totaled cars
My Senior year we had something called a "Class Project" something we worked on all year long. And my project was on Flash Over. For my project, i wore all my PPE, got a SCBA and wore it. Just being in full gear gave them some wow factor. Then I went on air and spoke to them along the lines of How down hear at the floor it was 180 degrees, the bottom of the window well was so and so..ect ect all the way to the roof. And then I stood at the door, got on my knees, and crawled 5 feet inward and Said "If this room flashed over, I would be lucky to survive" I then went off air and went over what Flashover was. I build a small scale building out of metal and showed how it would flashover out of the front doors. It was fun. I got a A, and as i remember it was a 96..
You have fresh out look on the fire service because you have not been exposed to a lot of "This is the way it's done " If you apply yourself you may think of the next big step in saving lives. Think outside the box. We need the next firefighters to be thinkers and dreamers. What do YOU imagine we need?
Well ive been on for 3 1/2 years now so i know alot about "this is how it is" factor. Thank you all for the great ideas. i might try and follow something along the topic of flashovers like Mac mentioned.
