hey yeah we use vest they are ansi class 3 made by gloware. i love the idea of wearing them because most of our district is on highly travled roads. saftey is number one
Orbie....The vests are NOT ANSI class III, they are ANSI class II...they don't have enough surface area without sleeves to make class III...But they are still compliant with the Law that went into effect last November...By the way Lakeland makes them with fire retardant material if interested...BUT...they are rather expensive....Paul
I just checked their website....TSA has them on a clearance for $6.00 each....and those are the DOT style rip-aways.....Paul
I wear one daily for my B job as hydrant tech. for our county fire dept. but a few months back I was filling in at another volunteer station and a guy broke down across the street so I grabbed a traffic vest out of their truck I it was one with like 20 places that break away w/ velcro for safety...well I wasn't used to it and none of the straps were attached and it took me entirely to long to put it on...a little embarassing with traffic backed up, I could have put an airpack in half that time!
we have the traffic vest and i think it's ok. we have the ones that you can pull off quick. i think if i had a way i would have them built in to the turn-outs that sure would be easy to keep up with.
Yes I know they are hot, down south anyway, but a good requirment. We have rules at both my vol dept and EMS where i work on wearing them. On my Vol dept all trucks have them then we are all issued them. In fact most of us have two. One large enough to go over turnouts. But they are no shield, Traffic will still run you over. Watch out for those rubberneckers. I don't care how much you wear (and you should) they will not see you. All the articals warn you of a fine for not wearing them but no one here seems to know who will give you that $10,000 fine. No matter what we are going to have our lime green vest on. Just about all fire equipt suppliers have them.

Gregory, are you guys wearing the quilted goose down models? It gets quite hot here in Chicagoland, but I've never been hot because I was wearing my mesh traffic vest! Stay safe (and cool).
I have a question on this topic as well. (Please, excuse me if it has been talked about, posted or answered, as I have not seen it.)

How come we as Fire, Police, Rescue & EMS personnel are required to wear these vests, but we have to come up with the funds to get them?

I think that if it is required they (being the vests) must be provided.

Thanks, Jess
Check your state laws, most folks have to have the class 3 to respond to vehicle accidents or anything really that's near a highway. If you have to have class 3 I would not pay more than $12-$13 each for them. I sell these everyday, if you run in to trouble finding a good price let me know and I'll help you get on the right track.

I've not heard of any agency that is required to use these to fight fire, they are not flame retardant unless you spend big $$ per piece, but most highway related incidents do require a class 3.

Another consideration would be Dept. name or any other custom text on the vest.
Are you saying you think your F.D. should provide them for you, or that the Gov't should provide them for your F.D?
hell yes its a great idea. enhances visability on MVA's where everybody's watching the accident and not the responders. yes on da vest!
I just bought some class 3 vest with 5 point tear aways. They are nice vest for $11. 95 a piece. The total with our name on the back was $14.96 a piece. They have any size up to 4x for $11.95. They fit good over our gear also. I am sure that if you got as many as you say you are you would get one hell of a deal. Get back to me if you would like there address.
