Something I've done in the past....first go to www.usfa.dhs.gov and see what kind of free fire prevention materials they have. Then get yourself some volunteers, take a truck-- and have some fun. One of our elementary schools has a career day and we take a truck and get somebody to get fully geared up(SCBA TOO),we roll out 50' of hose and a low flow nozzle. We show them to not be afraid of a fully geared up fireman if they are trapped in fire, and we flow the water and let them(with our help) hold the nozzle. My first year in the dept. I took my dalmation (RIP Benny Beamer)- they absolutely loved him. After that,I Put together the fire prevention things....used crayons and coloring books I think, it wetn really well. GOOD LUCK, AND STAY SAFE......CHRIS
i was very active in 4-H during high school...last year we recieved a grant we bought pencils, erasiers & stickers...the fire department in Alamo which is where the school is located dontated suckers...myself & 3 other 4-Hers along with our 4-H agent & EMA director went around and passed the stuff out & tlkd with the kids about fire safety...in the past i think the alamo fire deparment took the fire trucks up to the school & showed it to the kids...& i think they had someone in full gear...hope this helps

On my dept we usually have between 8 to 10 guys that help on FPW. We split off in to 2 groups and either go to the schools and day cares or stay at the station as some day cares will come up to the station. At the larger schools we stand up in front of the entire school, put our gear on and crawl around letting everyone feel our gear and it gets us down on the little kids level so they aren't afraid of us. The smaller groups we will show them the truck and let them sit in it if they would like to. We have all sorts of stuff we hand out, plastic helmets, little foam footballs, coloring books, pencils, frisbees etc.

On the Wednesday night of FPW we have an open house up at the station. Open all the trucks up for people to climb on, set a cone out and let people try hitting it with water, set up a wrestling mat so kids can practice stop drop and roll, set up a spot so kids and adults can try on gear and give aways just to name a few things that we do.

Also we built a fire safety house next to our station. Its set up with 2 rooms divided by a wall with a big picture window in it. We fill half the house with safe smoke and let kids see what its like to be in a smoke filled room. It also allows the parents to see how there child will react to it.
