Not sure if this would be the right forum but figured it might be more of a general than a spefic. We are a small town and was discussing how to get weather alert radios into the homes. I have tried to look online to see if there might be any grants with no luck so far. Another thought was to have the city buy in bulk and maybe get a good price and sell at cost to homeowners. Has anyone tried this and if you had what kind of success. Any thoughts or ideas appreciated.

Have you, or your department approached any local electronics stores to inquire if they could sell them to you in bulk at cost? It's a thought.
not at this time, this was something just brought up in casual chat when a bunch of were together so i figured to start some research on my own, (they usually figure i will anyway) but that is a thought thanks. I have one thought about checking on a bulk rate and then seeing if some of the local larger businesses would be interested in funding maybe have a sticker on them with there name on them.
Instead of paying all the extra money for weather alert radios for all your members, why not subscribe to the weather channels weather alert messages via cell phone? It would be cheaper and virtually everyone has a cell phone. You could have select officers receive weather alerts and when severe weather is on the horizon have a crew assemble at the station with a brief weather update via your pager services.
Sorry I guess I did not make myself really all that clear. We were discussing getting them into civilian homes not the fire fighters. Most all the firemen have either a radio, scanner or pager that they use to alert them. One of the things that we learned after the tornado most people had no clue what was coming. I realize there should have been some responsiblity on there part for watching news, etc. The weather radio alert was something a bunch of just thought up.
There is a grant out there for that i think that it gets weather alert radios and sirnes that you put up all thow the towen i will look for it when i get back to work in a 2 weeks

Hadnt thought about checking with fema I will do that. Thanks for the tip.
Thanks, at one time I thought I had seen something about a grant for that myself but I dont remember where it was.
is this for the StormReady program from the NWS? If not you might want to look up their page. http://www.weather.gov/stormready/ Over at the college I work at (College of DuPage) we are in the process of getting it stormready and this weather radio issue is similar with us. Amazon has them fairly cheap if you go through them.

This is the radio that Northern Illinois University selected for when they went stormready. One of my friends is the meteorologist there who kicked off that project.
Hope this helps. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Why not do a segment on a local television station. Most stations are happy to work with fire departments/law enforcement when it comes to public awareness.
