There have been many many topics posted on this page about all things in the fire service. Some have great depth to them...some you just have to respond with one word...or many words over and over and over again to get your "points".
So in contrast to the fire department of 50 years ago, even 100 years ago and keeping in mind the economic struggles that we are now having how do you think the statement... "Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy...a kidd'll eat ivy too...wouldnt you?"fits into todays fire service.
The way I take it is that the older more experienced firefighters will take the substance (oats) and use that to build upon and grow. Experience is the best teacher as we all know and there is no shortcuts to acheiving it.
The ivy is what the probies & rookies eat, just like the little lambs. They fill up so to speak on the salad and appetizers before the main course comes and do not have room to partake of it. The younger guys are quick to jump on the bandwagon for the newest and greatest thing without having the knowledge and experience to back it up and justify it.
Knowledge is one thing . . . I myself know alot of useless stuff. It is being able to apply the knowledge into a practical application that will determine the future.
I like your take John, you really seem to get what Im striving to show here. Now how about what Dottie was closing in on...The Oats of funding and the Ivy of training?
What if there were no oats? No ivy? What if there was wheat and barley.....would that make a difference?
Or does this simply go back to the days of Horse drawn Fire Engines?
The oats of funding and the ivy of training . . . lets see.
The ivy of training falls right into my philosophy of rookies. Why else would they call colleges "ivy leagues"? It is because it is full of fresh talent that is bursting to rush out and make their mark on the world, experience be damned! They are full of ideas and ideals that have been either suppressed, quashed or tamed by the rest of us.
The oats of funding. If you think about it, Quaker Oats keeps telling us how eating them will help reduce cholesteral. Cholesteral is a serious health problem for many people, but through the proper "funding" you can reduce the risk to serious health risks and increase the amount of value you contribute to your organization.
This discussion reminds me of one of my favorite poems. I studied English Literature in college and Alfred Tennyson was one of my favorite victorian poets. His poem "Ulysses" has always been very inspirational to me, in fact I try to live my life by the last lines in the poem "to strive, to seek, to find and not to yield!".
In order not to detract from this discussion I will start another one for us to view the poem and discuss its implications to life and the fires service.
Well Jake I think your touching on a very serious subject. One however I am not sure i am capable of going into great depth for. My brain is hurting just thinking today. So with that said I will SIMPLY comment. You've been nippin on that tall bottle way too much this morning.
Women in the Fire service today is a good thing. They meet the same requirements as men do and can do the same job as we do within the parameters that we all are constrained with. However, the probies need time, experience and many rides to fulfill the job that we know today. 100 years or even 50 years we were so hung up with tradition and paradigms. That we missed the obvious. Its about everyone going home safe. Is that building worth my life? Or my partners? Why put mine or someone elses life on the line for a black spot?
Well Bro, I'm gonna stop now cause my head hurts.
was the best I could do Bro.
Mares eat oats and does eat oats: firefighters fight fire and even when the times change they will still fight fires no matter what.
and little lambs eat ivy...a kidd'll eat ivy too...: Fire and EMS needs to always go to school and learn. Continuing education is important in this line of work. A new firefighter or Rescue Team member will need to train and study to gain knowledge.
wouldnt you?: I am taking this question at face value. Its a question asking you if you think education is important.
Thats all I can can come up with. I would like to think more on this and get back to you all. I need to think and figure out lamb.. maybe lamb is a part of the firefighter like family. Ivy could mean two things, poison and school so if a firefighter goes to school they will benefit but if they do not practice what they learn in school then they will forget and when at a scene they could get hurt (ivy).
