If you have the rank of "Junior Chief"..."Chief"...anything, the FIRST thing you need to understand is how to act professionally. What purpose does referring to them as "fire fairy's" serve other than to degrade them?
I have been involved with the our local Junior program, as the Instructor in charge at our County program. One thing that does NOT belong in ANY junior program is degrading or belittling other participants.
However I don't want to seem too harsh on you, and I am betting that you use the term in jest, so to hopefully answer your question, The Explorer program IS a Boy Scout-sponsored program with set parameters and guidlines.
ANY fire department that sponsors a junior, cadet, or Explorer program should be commended for their proactive efforts in making a positive contribution to the fire service's future, and to the future of the student participants.
Good luck to you. I wish you well, and hopefully you will continue on and become a firefighter. Just use your head, and remember how you represent yourself is how your community will view your fire department, and the fire service in general.
ok thanks and i know calling them fire fairys isnt right but its more of a joke i still call them explorers since thts what i started as now i understand that its a bsa program but we have no affiliation with bsa and our insurance covers members to the age of 14 since we dont have affiliation with the bsa is it wrong/ illegal to call our 14 and 15 year old Explorers there just fireman to us and in the process of learning the program we have set up is as explorers u go to class and drills and get the experince and than u become a junior ff and start answering calls and ride the trucks for fire ground support thanks for the replys and i take the criticism as feedback
well were i am a junior is called a cadet
beg to differ but you dont need to be part of the BSA to be an explorer
my post was with the BSA before aand we were called fire cadets after a while we got tired of so much BS and withdraw from the ''cadets '' and became ''explorers'' sponsored by our department
yes we are insured with the same company as the BSA ,under the same terms , by theres nothing in common between us
those are my two cents!
