In our community we have 3 vital assets. Firefighters, Police and EMS. Some instances the EMS is combined with the Fire Department. In a lot of instances, the Police and Firefighters have a nagging relationship that flares up on occasion. This is a problem we need to have corrected, for the good of communities nationwide. It isn't a job of who has more stress. If I'm a police officer and at any minute I pull a vehical over and could be shot, or hit by a vehical Yes thats stress. Look outside the box, even us as firefighters/EMS/Haz Mat teams have our own list of stress situations. Being inside a building at temperatures well over 1000 degrees is stress. Completing a search and rescue for a victim still inside is stressful. Responding to a Hazardous Materials Spill of an unknown substance is stressful. Now that some of the examples are down, lets move along.
I think we as firefighters have received a bad reputation because of the mistakes of peers before us, and or just the dislike for certain people on the department. Instead of giving orders to one another if we can INTEROPERATE with the police on scene of any call, we will be better off. Yes, this will take some immense time to get working, but we all need to get a better working relationship with our public service counterparts.
What are some of the ways you think we could better impliment a better relationship with the local law enforcement officers in your area. (and yes, doughnuts and coffee once a week would be funny, but not the answer I'm looking for)

Use the ICS/NIMS systems on every call no matter how large or small. That puts an end to any arguement about who's in charge. These systems took years to develop and from what I personally have seen IT WORKS!
we usually have a good working relationship with the police. sometimes though we as firefighters do get upset because we get stuck directing traffic at accident scenes for hours. even though they give us free flares from time to time we feel that we there should be a way to shorten the time.
The NIMS and ICS system is great. I will grant you that. Only problem is, I fear a lot of company's (even our beloved police department) are sleeping through local classes and taking a "group test" (seen it in action, trust me)
We mostly work with the State cops and most of them are good , but like everything some are less then professional The thing that controls this is how you approach it as well. A piss poor attitude is met with the same attitude. I know my job and I hope they know theres
we've got a great working relationship with all the other servises out there, maybe because we're not a major city or something, but I do remember the days were it was like pulling your teeth out to get something done or vise vera
