Does anyone know much about Wakenhut, I'm at the end of the process with them now and I was trying to find out about the pay of course, and what I need to start getting to prepair myself for going over. Do I need to start getting uniforms, gear,or things to keep my mind off being away from my wife and kids.

I do not know what you'll need or want as it relates to what is provided for firefighting. What I can give are some things that came in handy in 2005 when I was there as a soldier. First I'd like to say that your facilities will depend on what base/area you go to. I highly recommend baby wipes as much of the bathroom facilities are porta potties and they make things alot easier. They also come in handy when you don't have time to shower. Definately bring things to keep your mind away from home a little, this will make being away for a great length of time easier. Don't get me wrong, you'll want stuff that reminds you of home as well (as weird as that may sound). I don't knwo what is given for uniforms. I'd imagine that the representative of Wakenhut will provide you with a list of things that are necessities. I don't know how much of a problem it is, but I know that when I was over there, our base had a huge problem with rocket and mortar fire (not meant to worry you, just pointing it out). Most bases have some assemblance of electricity and usually you'll have access to televisions and DVD players. I'd recommend DVD's and a personal battery powered DVD player with a recharging option or rechargable batteries. Don't worry too much though, there are usually on base markets that you can buy all sorts of DVD's at. They usually have great deals on them too. Alot of these stands will have collections by actor/actress with upward of 20 DVD's. It's weird though, there's always one oddball DVD in there. I bought the Sylvester Stallone collection that they were selling on my base, it had like 14 actual Stallone movies along with some Travolta movie. Anyway, I'll keep thinking about little things that help out. As I said, things are probably a little different now, but I know I was a huge fan of having the baby wipes, my personal DVD player and my Ipod. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask via message, this forum or a comment on my profile.
When you heading over?

You will make 6 figures!!!
Dont buy and any uniforms, gear or boots. They will give you more than you know what to do with.
Pack lite, trust me!! Anything you dont bring you can buy in country either in baghdad or whereever they send you.
You will have to lug everything you have through houston, dubai, baghdad and wherever they send you to work. Unless you like that I wouldnt!!
Why don't you apply for Miami-Dade? You can make 6 figures easy with some OT and it's like being in a third world country-lol.
I enjoy working overseas! Not every where there is overseas work is it a 3rd world country. There is places like spain where I am trying to get to but all positions are always filled. Plus its a great experience for myself and I get to do a lot of traveling. My next vacation I am looking to go to the himalays or a small town in the hills of swizterland.

Thanks for the response Darlene
