WE have been getting a ton of calls from ppl who light a fire ie brush or grass and then leave. They are the land owner so not an arson type of deal. Does this happen every where or are the ppl where I live just plain old stupid??

We get calls for unattended grass/brush fires . When we arrive we try and find the owner, if it's not out of control, to see if they want it extinguished. Yup, stupid to leave a fire unattended, especially when it's windy, but it happens here too. TCSS
We get them too. If the owner is able to be found, we give him a long speech about burn regs. If not, we hose it down and turn it into a puddle so they can't restart it. Then leave a note about who to talk to if they have questions.
Just returned from a trash barrel that was left unattended. Something must have popped out and caught the pine needles on the ground on fire. The fire spread between a barn and corn crib. A dog house that was against the back of the barn had asphalt shingles caught fire and was getting into the barn itself. A passer-by called 911, the owner had no idea that anything was going on. Lucky!
In addition to these guidelines, if the smoke is bothering someone else we also extinguish...
Happens all the time except they are trash piles which turn into grass fires. We extinguish them and the pile. In Texas, any outside fire left unattended is an illegal burn. If it causes damage to another persons property, they are liable for the damages. Depending on the amount of resources used to control the fire, may be responsible for our costs as well. Whether they are plain old stupid, or extraordinarily stupid, without them we wouldn't have a job.
Pretty much the same thing here, with the exception that it is illegal to burn anything other than yard waste. You are not allowed to burn cardboard, trash, building materials. As far as yarb waste it must be from your own yard. You can not haul brush from anywhere else and burn it on your property. After the fire is extinguished, if the property owners are not members, they are sent bill for our services which can be very expensive due to being based on number of trucks on scene and how labor intensive it is to put it out. If we continue to have problems from said property owner they are also cited by law enforcement.
