HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- Police say at least six people were injured when a teenager stole a sport utility vehicle belonging to a Long Island fire official and took it for a drive, flashing its emergency lights and smashing into other cars.

Police say the suspect jumped into the driver's seat of the Uniondale fire chief's SUV after the official left the keys inside and the engine running while parked at Hofstra University in Hempstead. The fire chief had gone to the university on Tuesday to answer an alarm.

Police say the teenager struck the cars on Fulton Avenue. It was not immediately clear how many vehicles were struck. One person suffered serious injuries.

Police have not identified the teenager, who was arrested on a charge of theft of a fire department vehicle.
